I have some favorites for my gun but would anybody care to chime in I'm about to reload for a buddy and we are hoping to find a magic load for his 308 right off the bat.... I'm kind of leaning towards45 to 46 grains of Varget and setting the bullet 20K off the lands!?

What bullet? Purpose of load--hunt, target or ??? Type of rifle or pistol?
I do quite well in a number of rifles/pistols using Win 748 or Benchmark. My loads are all for hunting using Nosler PAR, Speer or Barnes TTSX bullets that are 150 or 130gr

My 308 shot very well in a lot of matches, using a 155 gr match bullet (usually Nosler) and a healthy dose of Varget. RL-15 performed as well.

This will be a bolt action rifle for Wisconsin deer hunting and we kind of like our lead tip bullets here so it will probably be a 150 Hornady Spire point.

My Remington 308 Winchester loves the Hornady 150 grain Spire Point Flat Base bullet with 44.9 grains of IMR 4064 seated at the Cannelure, base to Ogive = 2.152", COAL ~ 2.750" (no crimp). I get about 2740 -2760 fps out of a 20" 1-10 twist barrel. Seems to be an ice cream load for 2 factory Remington rifles and a factory Savage 22" barrel with a 1-12 twist that I have loaded it for. These rifles have long throats. I get very repeatable .5 MOA 5 shot groups.

Ooh... I like that one I would say that's not just ice cream but maybe a little shot of creme de menthe mixed into boot!

Yes it shoots real well for me. I can't get anywhere near .020 off the lands with this rifle factory Remington. FYI, 44.9 grains of IMR 4064 is a max load in Hornady's book. Coincidentally 44.9 grains of Varget is also max load in Hornady's manual. 44.0 grains of IMR 4064 even shot well for me too, also but not nearly as good as 44.9 grains. I save my Varget for Nosler 168 Ballistic Tips and Sierra 175 SMK bullets.

Nice!

Yup, there are so many excellent loads for the 308 Winchester! (y)

And welcome aboard dd.payson 1018. Nice shooting.

I just set up my late grandfather's Winchester M88 for this fall, but I used a 165 HotCor. I found boat tails would not shoot out of it so I tried the HC and it was amazing. The old girl will hit 2740 fps and is under an inch with 48.5gr of 2000MR. Seated at 2.820ish.

Bit heavier than you asked, just wanted to present another option. Hope you don't mind!

The 150gr Sierra pro hunter over just about as much 748 the case will hold was a very good load in my interarms and 308 bolt gun.

A case full of IMR 3031 and the Hornady Interlock. 43ish grs will get 2800fps with this combo and I took ALOT of game with it in several rifles.

see the bullet section. 150 gr scirocco my mule deer. my fAVORITE so far. 308 tikka t3. varget or imr 4064 is my best.

Depending on the rifle 43 to 45 grs IMR 4895 with 150s. But 46 grs with 125 Nosler ballistic tip is a tack driver and deer stomper (Bang Flop over 90% of the time) in every 308 Win I have ever tried it in.

^^^^ That^^^^ (but I use Varget)

Don't be fooled into thinking it's too light, or just a varmint round.

To be honest, from my experience hunting the E. Carolina low country & volcanic peaks of Hawaii, the 150's just don't nail deer. Yeah, they die relatively quickly, but rarely DRT. Soft 180's did a lot better.

With about a 40 count to my credit.......try the 125BT's.

I have gotten good results from either IMR4064 or Varget with 150 or 165/68 Nosler ballistic tips or Sierra 150 grain game king bullets. Currently, 46 grains of Varget and a Nosler 165 ballistic tip shoots very good groups in my M1A. In the "old days", I ran 49 grains of 4064 with 150 gr. Sierra game kings in my .308s, a model 88 Winchester and model 700 Remington. Compressed loads, but they shot groups that went .5 moa and in one rifle .25 moa was a group I saw plenty of!

Gunner46 I have had the same results with 150/55s of many different flavors on deer. They kill them but they will run off 50 yards or so before they go down. The 125 BT BANG FLOP most of the time. I shoot the 125 BT in all my 30 cal. stuff. Just keep the impact velocity under 3000 fps and it is a deer killer.
