Best Tasting Animal?

Post about your favorite animal to eat here. Why? What do you like about it? How does it taste? Is it lean or fatty?

My personal favorite is dove. I have yet to find anything that tastes better than dove meat. Roasted with the skin on. There isn't much fat, but there is some if a bird has eaten a substantial amount of corn.

Domestically, elk.

Best I've had? Zebra. It tastes like the absolute best beef you've ever had. Highly recommended.

I keep hearing about zebra being excellent. Will have to try it someday.

Moose and elk are classic favorites. What specific kind of sheep are you referring to?

Domestically, mountain sheep is very good!
I've heard the old mountain men used to argue between it and cougar. I've had cougar once, and it was good, but not sure if it was better than sheep...
Hard to beat a young moose! And I really like elk too! And I also like bison and caribou!

The fallow buck in New Zealand was very tasty! (So was the red stag.)
Have always heard that axis deer and blackbuck are some of the best venison...look forward to trying both someday!

In Africa, we thought the springbok and nyala were both very good! Looking forward to trying some new species there in May...eland if I get one!
We won't be hunting zebra, but if they have some, I'll definitely try it. (Don't think Susan will as she is adverse to the idea of even shooting one, as it is a wild horse.)

While I grew up on beef from the family farm, as well as moose...I guess that I just like wild game!!!

I’ll take quail as an entree and fallow as my main. Spuds cooked in duck fat with a side of broccolini and a good red wine. Be purring like a kitten after that.

have had elk, moose, caribou, bear, whitetail, coon, armadillo, bear, groundhog, wild turkey, rabbit and more. My favorite without a doubt......Squirrel

Interesting! Chicken of the tree is certainly a favorite of many.

What was your experience like with the groundhog?

Sheep, Moose, elk, White tail, blacktail, mule deer on this continent.
Throw in Africa eland, zebra, Nyala probably top my list.
If it’s got feathers nothing beats Ptarmigan in the fall. Nothing comes remotely close.

Wow. I have NOT had the breadth of experiences that many of you have. I have been limited to more mundane things like whitetail deer, mule deer, elk, caribou, and some of the various small game animals available in New York State. Many of those experiences were a single occasion and/or decades ago.

The one thing I have seen is that even excellent game can be ruined by improper field dressing, butchering, and/or cooking. Similarly, I have seen a good cook make an excellent meal out of a "not-so-prime" cut of meat.

It has been a long time (decades) since I have had any of the following, but I do remember some tasty meals of cotton tail rabbit, ruffed grouse, and wood duck.

In recent history, grilled elk backstrap and grilled ground elk are things I have really enjoyed. Then of course, I cannot sign off without mentioning canned venison (both deer and elk).

I've had WT, Mule deer, Caribou, Elk, Antelope, Moose, Wild Boar, Mountain Lion, Turkey, Duck, Partridge, Woodcock, Rabbit, Squirrel, Beaver and Raccoon.
My favorites are Moose, Elk and Caribou. Wood ducks and pretty dang good too.

Most African game is better than we have on this half of the globe. It is typically lean and in general cooked over an actual fire, so the flavors aren’t polluted by gas or briquettes.
I would take eland over anything else.

I've eaten elk, bison, pronghorn, whitetail, mule deer, javelina, rabbit, squirrel, quail, dove, pheasant, chukar, and duck. Nothing beats quail slow simmered in gravy.

It is difficult to beat young moose. Black bear taken from grain field can be quite tasty. Bison is excellent.
