Guy,
I hunted upland birds for over 25 years with many different breeds. Most will do just fine in the field. You spend a lot more time walking and living with them than hunting so I think temperment and personality take the lead. I've had four Labs, three Brittanys, one short hair, one Vizsla and one Griffon. Labs are the easiest to live with but I've only ever seen one that'll point. By far the best all around dog was my Griffon - Stable and easy going at home, good guard dog, had the drive and legs to hunt the hills but stayed with us when we hunted on foot. Many of the pointing breeds will hunt "to big" for a hunter on foot especially in chukar country. I've found Wirehairs, Brittanys and Griffons to be better for foot hunters. Having a good retriever in chukar country will save your legs! My labs were all great retrievers but they would only last 1/2 a day in the hills - my Griffon was an excellent retriever even for ducks! If I were in your shoes I'd probably go with another Griffon. My favorite dog is my 1/2 Mastiff 1/2 Wolfhound but she only hunts coyotes and the Fedex guy!
