Birthday # 66

Catherine wanted to hike the Minam for her birthday this weekend. Started by wading the Minam just west of the town.
Some of you are aware the RMEF just finalized its largest land acquisition ever, the same area we started in. Soon you'll no longer need to wade the river.
We covered 32 miles this weekend, the toughest section today from Reds Horse Ranch on the Minam River, to Moss Springs. Today we gained 1,000 feet in the first mile. We gained another 1,000 feet over the next six miles. The last mile is the toughest. Along with another thousand feet the trail is out in the open on a southern exposure, gets pretty warm.
Moss Springs is only 10 miles from the house, but we did that in her jeep.

Don't want to sound negative on the RMEF but about 12 years ago I was Elk hunting in Colorado on a leased piece of property near the town of Oak Creek. Hunted this same spot for a good number of years and was great friends with the owner. A good number of Elk were taken by myself and my hunting buddy and the property was definitely a pleasure. The owner being up in age decided that instead of selling the land off he would donate it to the RMEF. The transaction went through smoothly and then the RMEF turned the property into a sanctuary for Game animals and our hunting was done. I was a bit upset to put it mildly. I called the RMEF to see if the area would ever be open to hunting and the answer was a curt "NO" I probably lost my temper a bit at the woman I was speaking with as it was not her fault but from what I know this organization is supposed to be working with Elk hunters.

I'm an on again off again member of the elk foundation. The Minam project, by all accounts, is an important one for elk wintering ground and hunter access. A good chunk of it was owned by Hancock insurance and subsidiary's, that is ok for hunter access, but as a business, the ground was always for sale at the right price.
