In my ever ending quest to complicate my life I bought another toy I have been wanting for a while.

It is a 7600 Remington in plain vanilla 30-06.

Been a while since I played with a pump and a 30-06 so I said what the heck.

Great all around gun and all my 7600 Whelens have been .75" groupers.

As if I did not have enough on my plate! Sheesh!! what a masochist!

As you said, the 7600 can produce some great groups. Fotis, everyone needs at least one 30-06 just for creds with fellow shooters.

Congrats!

Somewhere there is a shrine in Pa with a Model 760 atop a pile of antlers.

Nice pick-up. Anyone who has ever researched a rifle for quick, close-quarter work has written "Rem pump" on their list either slightly above or below "Marlin 336" or "Win -94".

Now go get yourself some look-thru mounts and a Bushnell Sportview and go drive some deer!

Seriously, they are a fun, reliable gun and like your experience has shown, surprisingly accurate. Were you able to use regular dies when loading for your Whelens? Always wondered if you can order a small-base die for that cartridge.

Fotis, I have always wanted one of them 7600's. A 30-06 in one might be a ton of fun. Set up right, it should be a blast. It would be cool to run some 220 PTs around 2500 and have a big thumper for the timber. I've tried to find a 7600 in a Whelen, but it seems most that have one, will not let them go.

Masochist....? Who you kidding  I will look forward to seeing how this one shoots and how you set it up. Possibly unfortuneately, my only exposure to the 7600 (and the remmington auto) has been at public sight-ins at the club. Guys who show up a week before the season opens, with a new box of Walmart shells, a filthy rifle, with see thru mounts and a bushnell scope. A perscription for problems. Sorry, but the last couple times there have been at least one of these. The last guy was a real @$$ when I suggested that he expected a bit much from such a set up. I look forward to seeing how well they really can shoot! Doctor Fotis is in.... :) CL

Nice one Fotis.

The 760/7600 has been known to be very accurate. I had a 742 Carbine 30-06 that shot .5" at 100 yds with hand loads!

yup

I will be trying 180 gr at 2700 fps or so with RL17.

I have a synthetic version .280 (Scotty?) that was made for Grice Wholesale many years back. With my 140 BT handloads it will easily group in the .5-.75 range depending on how much attention I pay to it.

Lee,

That is just mean. You know it will give Scotty dyspepsia all night long. Man, this crowd really picks on that young Marine.

Nice looking choice Fotis. A 760 or 7600 in the 06 flavor can be hell on elk in the thick stuff.

A 220 gr PT would really be a penetrating power house for black timber hunting.
Kind of like a drill press.

That would be what I loaded with a slide actioned 30-06. Just something cool about that big long PT sticking out of the case... Now a slide actioned Whelen, makes me wonder.. Almost seems like a good excuse to load some big 250 Roundnoses.... Around 2400 with them would be some super stoppers!
