I had not previously worked with a BOSS system, nor had I owned a rifle in 280Rem. After working up some loads, I went again to the range today. Two other 139 gr. bullets had fired consistant groups in the 3/4" range at 100 yards. Most casual shooters who fire five rounds a year, just before deer season in order to check zero, would be ecstatic if they shot groups like that. Most of us here are a from a different breed and maybe a little crazy, regarding putting small groups on paper. I wanted to see if Noslers could do better.
I used new Remington brass, after measuring the length, chamfering the mouth and truing up the flash hole. As an aside, all or the new brass was a tad short. I then loaded ten rounds, using Win. Std. large rifle primers and 53 grains of IMR4350, to push 140 grain AB bullets. Three rounds fired a tiny, one hole clover, measuring 5/32" center to center. I never got a group like that from a light barrel deer rifle with 22 inch barrel. I put the rifle down and shot another rifle, allowing the barrel to cool completely. The second group had two rounds 1/8" apart, wth a "flyer"(my error) making the three shot group measure 7/16".
I will not try to improve on that load. I realize that at my age, I will not always hold groups like that. The day was bright and calm and in the low 70s. Even though the first group made me feel like I was choking a little on the second group, I was happy.
The local range only has the 100 yard range, so I will need to go elsewhere to check where I am hitting at 200 and 300 yards. I zeroed to shoot 1 3/4" high at 100 yards. If anyone can let me know where the bullet should be at 200 and 300 yds., I will appreciate it.
The MV was a bit scattered, but I am not concerned, as that Chrony always turns in scattered MV on every rifle that I fire. Nine rounds chronied at : 2946, 3022, 2938, 2945, 2942, 2932, 2988, 2925, 2899.
