Who's got experience with an old/reproduction Black Powder Cartridge Rifle?

One of the single shots? I don't really care which one... Sharps, Pedersolli, Winchester...

Kind of getting the bug to get some sort of .40-65, .45/70, something along those lines. A "Quigly rifle" if you will... Do some longer range gong-shooting with it at the local gun club, and maybe even have a go at bear or mule deer or something one of these days...

Tell me about your rifle, loads, shooting it, maintaining it, all that good stuff...

Oh, and what to look out for in my rifle search!

Thanks, Guy

I'm all ears and eyes. Ever since you posted those other pictures I've been looking on and off for awhile.

Yeah, I made the mistake of thinking back about my stop in Big Timber MT last fall... Thinking about those wonderful rifles they build there at C. Sharps.

Didn't go inside at Shiloh Sharps, I understand they're just as nice.

Funny, the two firms, within a block of each other in a small town out on the Great Plains.

I am with you. I have a slew of great centerfire rifles, so a cool single shot would be alot of fun. Especially if something could reach out a decent distance.

My only experience with these have been with a Sharps paper cartridge which is the earliest type of rifle cartridge breach loaders and it was very similar to a muzzle loader as far as cleaning but making the paper cartridges was a pain.

Those are some pretty cool rifles.
Those big heavy hard cast bullets would be fun to lob.

We've got a pretty cool bunch of guys out here who delight in slinging lead at 600 - 1,000 yards with a variety of lever action & single shot rifles, loaded amazingly light... Light powder that is. Heavy bullets as a rule.

Fun group. I can sorta play with my 20" .30-30 Glenfield, but it's just not the same. Might be fun to try some more cast in the .375 Number One, but then I'd have to fit it with some sort of tang sight...

I'd rather just get a reproduction Sharps or Rolling Block or something for the purpose. Think I'm willing to sacrifice a couple of shotguns and/or rifles to make it happen.

I thought those BP rifles shot rather soft bullets using black powder. A hard cast bullet wouldn't bump to fill the rifling. IIRC, bullets were just pure lead with just enough tin to cast well. The only BP cartridge I shoot is the 45-70 and I don't use BP. I hate cleaning that stuff after a range session. I quit shooting my muzzle loaders for that reason. I admit it, I'm lazy.

Well I was out and about today with the rain I couldn't do much of anything else and I saw something that reminded me of this post and I think it is priced reasonably.
How about a Remington Rolling Block in 8mm Danish for a build project? It is a civilian model with a 30" barrel and sling swivel attached to the barrel but the rear sight was missing.

The 45-70 lobbing a 500 grain cast lead bullet is pure fun.
Load with Goex and have fun! As for rifle models I'm partial to the Billy Dixon.
Shiloh and Sharps are the only two I'd consider.
