Brass life 308?

Hey guy's. Anybody know about how many firings i can expect from my .308 brass? I'm FL re-sizing.

Your brass won't last long if you full lenght size them; probably 5 or six firings, depending on how hot your load is. Don't worry, 308 brass is cheap and very popular.

Depends on:
  • How high the pressure is in the load;
  • How soft the brass is, and its thickness;
  • How much resizing is occuring each time;
  • The amount of work hardening in the case;
  • The type of action being used.
With a tight chamber and a matching set of full length dies, some shooters have gotten over 40 reloads out of .308 brass. Shoot the same ammo through an M14 clone or Garand with a looser chamber, and you might be doing well to get 5 loadings.

What signs will first become apparent on the case as brass starts to go bad?

One of the first signs of case separation is superficial rings on the exterior of the case. They will be easier to see as time goes on and especially if the cases arent tumbled. Also, you can take a piece of fine gauge wire and bend it slightly and run it along the inside walls of the case and any deep scratches are usually a case separation laying in wait. A good rule of thumb for myself is to keep track of how many times a bunch of cases has been reloaded. For a 308 as example, after 4 shots, I retire them to the loading bench for load workup and test firing only. That way, if they do split, they will be at the range, where you will be wearing eye and ear protection. And you can extract the case remnants at your leisure rather than doing it if you can still see, in a hurried manner with your jacknife as the buck of you dreams hurries away badly needing that second shot that wont chamber because of the case split. Just my way of thinking, do with as you like. Regards- Elkslayer308
