Well, I talked to Browning today and they said that there was no warrantee on the A-Bolt because it was built in 1988. I didn't think it was that old. Any way, they said they can put a new barrel on it for $475.

So, what would you do, new factory barrel, have it shipped home and try a new load combo, or have it shipped home and try selling it and then get a new 7mmRM?

Man I was hoping they would hook me up with an new barrel, but it didn't happen.

Get a custom barrel on it from a good gunsmith, have the action blueprinted and call it done.

The custom barrel would have to wait due to hunting/fishing funds being lower than normal.

Is the rifle a sentimental favorite? Do you REALLY want it?

Trade it for something you do want... Or just sell it outright, and set the money aside to help on the hunting trip...

WT, if I recall correctly from prior posts, you've tried quite a few loads without much luck. I don't know if I'd head down that road, it gets frustrating. If you've tried Noslers and/or Sierras in it to no avail, might be time to trade that one off. Aside from giving you a new barrel, it would've been nice for them to put one on at cost. $475 seems like a lot for a new factory barrel.

The question becomes if you can get what you really want for less than trade-in and $475, I'd say do that.

Ouch. 475 for a new factory barrel? No thanks. You could swing a custom barrel for 300 to 350 with a couple hundred more for the gunsmith. My vote is for selling or trading it now, but you could end up with the same problem with a new rig. It is tempting to recommend that you go custom with it so you could experience a real shooter.

One last thought. What about a re-crown just to see if there is any difference?

I'm thinking that unless it was your favorite hunting rifle....just stick it back in the safe or trade it off.

You can spend $500 and get a decent shooter from a number of makers. If you sell or trade off the A-bolt and put $500 with it you'll be in Kimber or Winchester or Remington or just about any other quality rifle you want.

Putting $500 in a barrel for the A-bolt might get you a shooter, but it won't be worth more than any other A-bolt.

I know the Tikka is well liked here but I would look at the Howa line also since you could pick one up in a pillar bedded Hogue stock for less and they are a good well built rifle. Howa makes the Vanguard for Wby. I had one I sold because I didn't care for the caliber it was chambered for but it was one slick action and would shoot well.
Buds also carries Howa.

My SIL bought a used Tikka 3Lite in 7mm mag off a fellow awhile back. Nothing done to it and it is a bonafide shooter! While not my cup o tea, some folks like the Ruger American. I've had Howas that were a 50/50 gamble on accuracy, took a bit of work. No way I'd spend a dime on that Browning myself...you've put in your time, that's fair, now pull the plug on that comatose shooter like starting a lawnmower! ha.

I got mad and rehabbed a poor shooting rifle years ago. Worst money on rifles I've spent. It shot in the end but I just couldn't enjoy it. learned you can't make chicken salad from chicken cr##.
Like the guys said, without an emotional tie, send it down the road.

I had a rifle for several years that defied all of my attempts to wring out consistent MOA, I made numerous changes to it, including a barrel change. I finally got to the point where I even hated to pick it up so I got rid if it. I have never regretted that decision. If you are not happy with it, a new rifle may well be your best choice. Bud's is offering a great deal, particularly if a barrel job will cost you $475.

I believe Mr Townsend said it. The only interesting rifles are accurate ones. Sell it or swap it for a TC ICON. Read the fine print at the end of any article in the gun rags. Generally those suckers shoot! Far as that goes a nice Savage American classic....... Nuf Said. Just my .o2. IF it isnt a sentimental piece, life is to short to miss out shooting an accurate rifle. CL

If it were me I would sell it. A new barrel may fix the issue but then again maybe not. A new rifle will come with a warranty if there was to be any issues. While I don't own one the Tikka rifles sure seem to be great shooters and the price is very attractive. Just my .02

Send it. Use the profit to buy an elk or deer tag. You've got a great shooting 25-06, 270, 30-06, 300 WBY and 338 Win Mag. You don't have a need for a 7 with that sorta line up. I know it's easier to give that advice than take it, but unless your ready to put it away and have it rebarreled when you have the money I wouldn't waste powder or Bullets on it.

Easier said than done Scott, for some reason I feel there is a need for a 7mmRM in the collection. I will think about your idea and see how I feel about it in a few days.

I do still have dies, brass, bullets and powders for the 7mmRM so...

Trust me Matt, I have a ton of overlap in my safe, and a 7mm Rem Mag is a very versatile cartridge. It was my first BG rifle/cartridge. It really does everything. Nowadays I've got a 7mm WSM and MSM.. Talk about overlap...
