At what point is the bullet seated to far out of the neck? I usually like the base of the bullet to be in line with the base of the neck or deeper. With my '06, if I seat to the lands, it is about 3/4 of the way into the neck. Let's hear some opinions on this one.

I've heard minimum a bullet diameter, or .308, in the neck. However, a barrel maker once told me even that doesn't matter much, so long as the bullet is straight.

Personally, I like the bullet away from the lands anyway, so I seat the bullet as deep as I can to and still have a nice group.

What's your OAL? I'm currently using 3.278 inches, also for a 30-06.

Doubtful you can use that in a standard 06 chamber SAMMI is at 3.34. At 3.8 your probably stuffing that bullet in the lands.

I believe the actual OAL is 2.800". When you set up the Hornady OAL tool on a set of calipers, your already reading 1". I use a wooden dowel down the barrel, and feather the bullet so it's just touching the lands.

Where does the 3.340" come from? Is that base to ogive?

How far do you like the bullet to be seated into the neck?

SE, I want about a caliber of the bullet in the neck if possible. I think you probably have plenty in the neck as you are. You are certainly longer that 2.8 with the 30-06 as that is loaded 308 length ammo. I would imagine you are somewhere in the 3.2 to 3.5 range with your bullet seated near the lands. I like to keep the bullet a little in the case for my loads. I am sure it wouldn't matter too much for a bench gun, but for hunting ammo, I want it to be able to stand a little abuse.

That comes from your reloading manual that is the factory spec for the chamber. From bolt face to tip of bullet. If my chamber is cut right and depending on the bullet to the base of the neck before it expands to the shoulder. This is like I said largely dependent on how your particular rifle is chambered. My 280AI I streched it out so I can seat my bullets farther out and gain more powder capacity without using a compressed load.

If I have to guess, I would guess you're about 3.280 to 3.300 OAL, assuming you're using 180s, seated to the base of the neck.
