Bullet Testing Jugs?

I had a genious idea last night. I have worked for the Teton County Weed District for the last 4 or 5 summers. This summer we built a hog wire "cage" outside the shop so all the farmers can bring their washed jugs and put them in the "cage" for recycling instead of just throwing them in the dump or whatever they do with them. Well I figured they would work great for bullet testing. They are pretty thick plastic though. I called my boss this morning and he said I was welcome to use them but he mentioned that they didnt have caps. Will this be a problem? I cant imagine it would be but i didnt want to waste time or ammo.

It won't hurt the bullet performance. It will, however, give an interesting spout of water straight up out of each jug as the bullet hits it, and for those jugs which don't get ripped up by the pressure wave, it will be pretty cool looking, I bet. No worries.

Well there are about 100-150 jugs up there and Im about to go get as many as I can fit in the back of my pickup. Ill be sure to take lots of pictures and video! Dad and I are going out to my grandparents and get to shootin as soon as he gets off work.

For a cap you could always use some of the material that no one on this forum is without in their trucks...duct tape
What is the gallon capacity of the jugs? Most farmers/ranchers I know that buy weed killer are buying 5 gallon pails.

DT, I am jealous! That is alot of good shooting material! Man, that sounds like a ton of fun and the extra thick plastic is just like thick hide to me.

Just like Joel said, a little duct tape over the top should keep the water in there. I wouldn't worry too much about tops anyhow. Water flys around anyhow, but the tape on it will help you when you have to look for bullets, if the jugs get tipped over. I am really looking forward to these videos. Scotty

Duct tape is cheap, and it nicely covers holes of all sizes.

And don't leave home without it  ...McGivered more fixes than I care to think about with duct tape.

They are 2.5gal jugs. Im pretty excited to do it. All the bullets I have recovered have been from the dirt or animals. So Im itching to see what they will all look like. I dont know what rifles my dad is going to shoot but Im sure he will at least shoot his 300 RUM with 180 ABs at 3250fps and 25-06 with Btips. Im going to bring my 30-30 shooting 170 Powershoks, 150 Fusions, and maybe some 170 Corelokts and 160 Leverevolution. Also my 243 with 95gr btips, 95gr Fusions, and 85gr TSX, My 270 Win with 130gr ABs and 130 Fusions, my 300WSM with 180 ABs at 2900, and maybe my 22-250 with 60gr Partitions. Hopefully we can get all of these shot and not use up all the bottles. Might have to shoot some more tomorrow if we dont get through all the rifles. Im sure Ill think of some more I want to shoot into jugs.

That's alot of water jugs to shoot all those calibers!!! Take lots of pictures for us.

DT- that is a worthy range trip if I have ever heard of one! Now that is just straight out FUN! Scotty

I go through several hundred of those a year. Guess I should start saving them  . I would think that if you kept them in the box it would make for easy clean up as well. I would think that four boxes with two jugs each would stop most anything. I wonder if the shock would destroy the boxes though. I'll have to try that this weekend.

Thanks for the great idea!

Great idea...alot less plastic to chase around. The heavier plastic those containers are made from over milk jugs should create less shredding.

Jake, what are you going to run into them? Some 375 action maybe?

Well guys...Ive got 66 2.5gal jugs in the truck full of water and ready to go! Ive got alot of ammo to test so hopefully we dont run out of jugs tonight. If we do I guess Ill have to finish the rest tomorrow. I had to sort through the jugs at work but there are about 30 or 40 more that dont have holes in them. If none of them had holes I would have probably 300 jugs to work with! We are heading out after we get the guns loaded up and the cameras are all charged up and ready to go! Hopefully Ill have some sweet recovered bullets and video to show ya'll in the next day or two.

By law, you are supposed to triple rinse and puncture any container that has had a pesticide in it, prior to going to a land fill or recycling facility. You did well to find that many without holes. My entomologist/pest control back round coming out to haunt you all.

Ackley, Like I said in my other post,we built the cage for the people around here to bring their jugs. They are supposed to triple rinse them and puncture them as well as pull off the labels and remove the caps. There was only a couple in there that looked like they hadn't been washed and they did a good job with the cutting of holes part! lol. Anyways. I did my part in putting holes in them! Im about to start working on my Bullet test post! Stay Tuned!!!

Looking forward to it...I think you had more more fun putting holes in them than anyone else will

Not to bad considering it was around 1300lbs of water. Truck is a 3/4 ton F-250. It did squat some though. Glad I wasnt driving my half ton. Check out the results guys! Thread is down at the bottom of the Bullet Test page. Figured I would put it there since there were lot of different calibers.
