My buddy drew his second Mountain Goat tag for the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness area. He was up scouting exactly a month ago and saw 5 goats near where we camped. There was a 10" billy in the group I was told. He did not shoot him because he was not haired up nicely yet. When we went in Monday there was an inch or two of snow.

Going in the visibility was pretty good and we had high hopes, but we could tell it was going to storm on us again. We got the tent set up as quickly as we could and it turned ugly!

Woke up to this and could tell it wasn't going to change anytime soon. Without being able to see, we were going to have an impossible time finding a goat unless we somehow walked on top of him.

It would clear enough once in a while to see for a few minutes, and then it would roll in again and we were down to 50 yards of visibility. It was pretty nice in this picture.

And this one not so good.

Wednesday and Thursday were a bust with no visibility. Went back in on Friday and it was hit or miss. Still managed to get some decent photo's. Could not find any goats on this day. Did see a Pine Martin which was pretty neat, and had a great time.

This is what it looked like down at the bottom roughly 4000 feet lower.

Got my first turkey back at his place. Nice fat young bird I am smoking tomorrow!!

Heading home saw some sheep with a couple little itty bitty rams in the bunch.

Had a great time and saw some more beautiful country. I am concentrating on my mule deer buck now that rut will be kicking in soon. I hope my friend makes it back to find a goat.

David, where did you see the sheep? Looks like around my country.

It was! Just east of Thompson Falls at the first marked "sheep warning" area. We were goat hunting about 50 miles N.W. of town in the southwest portion of the wilderness area.

He was carrying his Model 70 300 WSM with the laminate stock that the woman who I had do some checkering, did for him. He is shooting a 180 gr. AccuBond and has a Zeiss Conquest 3.5-10x44 on it. He finally started loading his own, after me loading for him for years!! He really enjoys it and said it was "mental therapy", and he really thanked me for loading for him for 24 years straight! Completely understands how time consuming it is. I think his 300 WSM will work great if he can find one w/o getting snowed out.

It was a lot of fun Scotty. I just wish we would have had a bit better weather. We only stayed in two days and then came out. Went back in for just the day on Friday.

Elk season opened here and I'm set to go. I have a special mule deer buck tag I'm hoping to fill in a draw area. They have some nice deer in there too! Hope I can find one.

Great stuff David!

Your hunting pard looks a little deranged in the photo at the Wilderness sign. That's good I think!

I believe he was thinking something along the lines of "Here we go on another adventure!" Heck it's his tag and he talked me (didn't have to try hard) into going with him.

That is some lovely country. Too bad about the weather, but that is the mountains. Great post, as usual, David. Thanks for keeping us all abreast.

Great pictures, and some beautiful country!

I am, however, unaccustomed to seeing sheep pictures with power lines in them! LOL

You had an awesome hunt my friend. Its not always about filling out the tag, but the friendships and the experience of the hunt. Camp set up etc........

Yes it is odd Kurt! They know where the good groceries are though.......down low. This was right along the highway. Bad thing is they are not very car smart and they kill a LOT of sheep every year in this area on the highway and the railroad track.

David, we've got quite a few miles of game fence now, installed between the highway/railroad and the hills where our bighorns live. A couple of years ago, before the fence was started, we lost 13 sheep to collisions with cars. Didn't do the cars any good either. We're hoping to have another 5+ miles of fence complete next year. It's good for the sheep herd, as well as the bumpers & fenders.

Our sheep liked coming down out of the hills and wandering around near the highway & railroad tracks time to time as well. They don't really recognize oncoming vehicles as a threat to their safety.

Our fence, though far from complete, has already helped tremendously.

Man, that 300WSM sounds exactly like my 270 and 7mm WSM's. Love those rifles. Almost wished I would have found the 300 to match them...
