Building a rifle for a friend north of the border SS M70 #4 Pac-Nor @ 24" and probably gonna drop it in a Micky Supergrade pillar beeded mag fill stock and top it with a 3-10 Z3 #4 in Talley Lightweights.

I've narrowed down to 3 calibers I figure I'll go a touch bigger for North of the Border. 338-06 35 Whelen or 9.3X62. now according to Corlanes factory fodder availability is 35 9.3 then 338. Feel free to chime in and help me with the dilemma. I don't know if he would have the desire to reload or have the patients.

35 Whelen followed by the 9.3x62, 338-06 ammo is extremely rare around here. I live in the sticks and can still find the first two.

Thank you, Jake. Since I'm receiving this fine gift...

What???? It's not for me? Oooooooh. My bad.

Thirty-five Whelen. Corlanes is correct in steering you toward this factory availability.

Jake,
You need to find out for sure whether or not he will reload. This factor is paramount to everything else.

If he's not a dedicated handloader, I'd go with the 9.3. According to Gerry & Corlanes ammo is available, and the 9.3 is really what the .35 Whelen wants to be when it grows up anyway...

Just kidding! What a great rifle! That McMillan Supergrade stock is a great one, and any of your three cartridge choices should do superbly on larger game.

Regards, Guy

Sounds like a Hell of a lucky friend. Spending part of the year in rural Alaska has taught me to pay attention to availability factors. 35 Whelan would serve well.

35 Whelen, the 9.3 would be a close second from what I've read. Our Canadian friends really like the old Whelen but if he plans on hunting in Africa sometime in the future I would opt for the 9.3 so he could find ammo in both locations.

My, this is a tough one. The .35 Whelen, no contest!  8) Of course, you knew that's what I'd say anyway. Right?

If he does hand load he could always neck up 30-06 brass to 338-06 if need be, or stick with the 35 Whelen. Although the Mauser round is still very popular overseas it would also be an excellent choice!

I can't believe I missed this post. 35 Whelen all the way :). I had mine made at Corlane they are a fine group of people. Jake what twist are you going to put in that PacNor? I went with the 1-14 but if I had to doing it again I would go 1-12. So if someday he would need a real big grain he would not have any problems.

Blessings,
Dan

Jeeze, I can't believe you had to ask.. 35 Whelen! Man Jake, it's like you don't even know us. There is some great ammo available for the Whelen, from Nosler, Buffalo Bore and probably some others I am forgetting about.

Guy, we used to be friends...
