Went out to a Jmads this morning to try my luck with some calling. I went to the same place as last weekend where I called in a pack of 6 to within 75 yards and they got away unscathed..
Well I was about 15 min late gettin to the opening stand. I always start with the coyote locator to see where and if they'll respond. Sure enough after the first opening sequence I could here a few out yonder where they usually come from. I then switched to male challenge for a couple sequences followed by woodpecker distress and rodent distress. I was by myself again, so remembering last times fiasco, I decided to sit more towards the hill where they came from last week, instead of lookign down the road that comes down the canyon where you would think they would come from...About the 15 minute mark I saw 2 dogs crest over the skyline about 350 yards away right in front of me. One of the dogs stayed up on skyline and just kinda stood there waching and waiting to see what all the ruckus was down below, the other dog was much more impatient and was coming in on a quick trot. She stopped about 150 yards away but I was not ready to shoot yet, I kinda had my rifle pointed in teh wrong direction again on the shooting stix so I didn't wanna move and have her bust me. I had the remote in my left hand still so I hit rodent distress 1 more time for a few seconds. That was all it took for her to come to her last and final death run...Now she wasn't exactly dead yet, the other guy was still posted up skyline watching my direction, however, like I was describing last weekend, there is just an ever so slightly dip in teh terrain about 75 yards out that when they pass, you cant see there head at all, thats when I try and make my move, it worked out this time as there were only 2 coyotes around instead of 6. A lot easier to pull that kinda stuff when theres not as many eyes everywhere. So shes on pretty much a full out run and when she got to that dip, I once again flicked my shooting stix away from my triple deuce and swung the rifle abit to my left. I timed it perfectly, soon as she was coming up I had the rifle in front of her trying to decide if I should take the running shot or try and get her to stop. Well about 25 yards I finally barked and whistled, she stopped on a dime looking right at me. I had the triple deuce up already, but was a few feet lower then her, I slowly/quickly raised up a few feet and once the crosshairs got to her brisket I touched off and sent a 55g SP at 3100fps on its short trip. It was pretty cool to see actually, It was like a bomb went off in her chest, I saw the bullet hit and rip open a 3" hole and steam just started coming from it. She was an old female, wore down teeth No exit, but the entry on the brisket at that close was pretty nasty, I dont care personally, just sharing how the bullet did. I'm using up these 55g SPs untill I get my 40g vmaxes loaded up again. Could you imagine if I woulda had my 264 w/140g amax at 3100fps on a 25 yard brisket shot, lol.
Made 2 more stands and didn't call anything in. 1 stand I could see 2 get up from laying in the CRP, they went up to a fencline and perched there butts down looking my way about a mile or so. I called and called and called, they either didn't care or weren't hungry, they finally got up and walked away after 45 minutes. I tried to spot and stalk them after that and had absolutely no luck...
Overall, was a good day, one more dog out of the way I suppose.
Coyotes like to come straight down off this hill. Its about 350-400 to the top from where I"m sitting. The little draw that I refer to is about 75 yards straight out, thats when I try to flick my shooting stix away because it always seems I'm pointed in the wrong directions!
Took this pic after I killed the coyote from my stand, lasered 24 yards, lol!
Sweet sweet success!! Love the 700 ADL in 222 rem for a calling rifle...
