I just got back from a guided hog hunt over by Upper Clear Lake in central California. Pig Point Ranch. The weather was perfect, clear ,sunny and 72 degrees.
I passed up a few of the European razor back hogs and homed in on a white and brown sow that took a while to get a shot at. It was chamise scrub brush and real dense. A lot of crawling through passageways and looking for hog feet at ground level. The guide finally set us up in a spot we could see up and down the steep hills under the brush and we waited the hogs out. They knew we were there but just like us they didn't know where. They finally crossed below us trying to reach a canyon with thick cover and I had my chance when they passed a small opening at about 40 yards and made a neck shot (missed the head). The 300 RUM with 180 A/Bs took out the spine and about half the neck at that range and speed. 3330 fps. Here's some pictures of the guide, the pig and me. I'm the one with the rifle.View attachment pig point 2011 014.JPGView attachment pig point 2011 003.JPG
The sow weighed about 175 lbs
