I got my cow elk on January 13. Not much to tell, a simple broadside shot with a 30-06 and the 165 gr. AccuBond. Elk went about 15 feet and expired. Biggest problem was the about 100 yard climb to get to the elk. Ain't much air at that elevation and for some reason there seemed to be a lot less this year. Usually after getting my animal I go out with my buddies to help bring in their animals but I felt so lousy I didn't even get out of bed. I picked up my processed meat and headed for home. Spent the night in Albuquerque and finished the trip the next day. Rested up for the next 24 hours and on Sunday felt so bad I went to Urgent care. Seems I have pneumonia. The meds are working so I guess I'll live. Hell of a way to end a hunt.
Rifle is a custom Mauser with 1 in 12" twist 24" barrel that puts the 165 gr. Accubonds into decent little clusters at about 2800 FPS. Powder is W760, Winchester WLR primers and brass. Bullet hit right at the last ribs busted the stomach :( and totally destroyed one lung. Bullet was not recovered. I'll be taking it real easy for a while till I'm sure I'm healed up.

For sure we want you to recuperate. Congratulations on getting your cow. Sounds like the sort of anticlimax you want. You've done well.

Congrats on the cow, Paul.
I'll be praying for your recovery.

Way to go Paul. Sounds like the old 06 did real well! Congrats.

Hope you get better soon.

Great job on getting your Elk Paul , praying you get well soon. At our age pneumonia can be serious so keep warm and drink lots of fluids.

Sending wishes for a quick and complete recovery from the pneumonia... Great job on the cow elk..
Have you tried 180's for elk? I have a few 165 Accubonds but have yet to try them. Regards, Rol

Big congrats on the elk... Mmmm vittles .
I hope your feeling better Paul .. Nemunoia sucks once you have it is easier to get the next time , and so on and so on.. I got a buddy that's fifty has had it six times since 35. Oil patch and our lovely weather up here don't help.

Paul,

Congrats on the cow elk.
Wishing you a speedy recovery!

Us old guys have to be careful about that high altitude hunting. Glad that you got your elk though and hope that you feel better, Paul!

My 30-06 is a custom with a 1 in 12" twist barrel. It does not like 180 gr. bullets. :( Frankly I would have preferred the heavier bullets but 3 and 4 inch groups don't work for me.
I'm doing a bit better with the pneumonia but I do wish it would hurry up and go away. I'm wanting to get to the range and burn some powder. I have several series of test loads made up that I want to get done. Thanks for the good wishes.

Good job Paul on the cow Elk ! Now concentrate on getting better and then we can look forward to you range report.

Blessings,
Dan

Have had pneumonia twice over the years, takes forever to heal up from. Hell of a thing to have to deal with on an elk hunt.

Get well soon. Congrats on filling the freezer, way to go using a .30-06. That's my favorite gun!

Congrats on the elk. There was probably the same amount of air, just not the same lung capacity!

Get well soon!

I have pneumonia at least once a year. I have had MRSA pneumonia for about 10 years, every winter, because of my immune system issues. Most people die from MRSA pneumonia the first time that they have it. I just hope that I don't get it again.

Congratulations on your cow, while you are resting up, you can be planning for the next season. Good luck
