I'm thinking about adding a "shooter" to the harem. What I mean by shooter is a gun that can handle a lot of rounds but still reach out 1k yds. Set up would be kinda tactical and would be used primarily for punching paper and smacking steel. Maybe the occasional songdog. Probably10-11lbs and set up to shoot from a bench or prone. No barrel burners! The calibers I mentioned above are in consideration. I want moderate recoil, good barrel life, ability to sling high BC bullets at a reasonable velocity. Which caliber/cartridge combinations do you prefer?
Thanks for your input!
Scott

That's what the Creedmore was designed to do you can pick up a Savage that will get it done and is a starter F class rifle.

...I went w/ the Creedmoor, more options for the .260 or 7-08, but the Creedmoor was designed right for a short action, the small amount of case cap. you lose is pretty well made up for by a more efficient case design that also allows you to seat the long (1.4") bullets out where they should be instead of taking up case cap. Mine shoots 200yd. groups like this...

Ditto on the Creedmoor. Mine shoots 0.35 MOA w/ factory ammo, and it's very pleasant to shoot. (Truth be told, I suspect I'm the limiting factor in this so far -- this rifle and caliber is probably capable of better...)

Any of the three would work but I am partial to the two 6.5's. I have been very happy with the 260 Rem but the 6.5 Creedmoor is pretty much the same when it comes to performance. You thinking of a factory gun or custom?

I'm with Jerry on this--either of the cartridges you name will work. I do have both the Creedmoor and the 260, and they will do what you are asking them to do.

Both the 6.5 Creedmore and the 260 Rem would be the way to go. Of the two mentioned, I would go with the 260 Rem. Brass can be easily fire formed for any of the 308 based cases.

My Buddy shoots the Creedmore & he has spoke very highly of it. He advised that she would be the last to leave his gun safe if he was down sizing.

Blessings,

I've been thinking along the same lines and the Creedmore has caught my attention. I would like to do a DIY custom with perhaps a Remage type barrel, or short chambered perhaps.
I'd prefer a M700 action but most likely have to buy a donor rifle to get a LH SA. I've also been looking at custom actions for a few hundred more in Stainless, that's already trued and ready to go.
I'm interested in the Savage's but don't really have any experience with one.
Anyway, this is in the future with plenty of time for decisions like that.

You won't go wrong with either 6.5 caliber.
With that said I went with a barrel burner for my 6.5 as it's a 6.5 x 284.

Yeah, the 260 and 6.5 CM are pretty high on my list of wants. Running the numbers they all look really good. I wouldn't skip over the 6.5 Swede either. Built on a regular LA would really give you alot of options. If your stuck with a short action, the 6.5CM is really the set up.

I have ran the numbers over and over and the difference from the 6.5x47 up to the 6.5 Swede is really small. All of them really do great things with sleek 123's and 140's.

Cabelas has Howa 1500s in Creedmoor now...

And I'm about to throw a little hissy fit... it's Creedmoor!

Sorry, I don't know why that bugs me so much.

Oops, my mistake, though in my defense, the Howa and Vanguard are pretty much the same rifle...

Yeah, and the Creedmoor is a fine cartridge that is a lot of fun to work with.

Just find yourself a M77 VT in 6.5 Creed. Runs about 10 pounds has a sweet trigger nice stock buy brass dies and bullets and have fun. If I was looking for one that's where I'd go. If I remember right it even has a 28" barrel long but it will work great for what you want.

When I bought my dies, only Hornady was offering them. Anybody else make them now (Forster would be ideal...)?
