Crossbolt?

Bullet's post on his upcoming build got me thinking on this (enjoy it Mike, sounds like a great rifle). I didn't want to hijack his thread, so I'll start a new one.

Almost all wooden stocks on factory rifles seem to come with a crossbolt just in front of the trigger. If a guy was going to buy an aftermarket wood stock, such as in a build as Mike is doing or just to get a higher grade stock for a factory rifle, does it need a crossbolt? Will a solid bedding job mitigate the need for one? Or is there a certain recoil threshold where you start needing to worry about it?

I have thought many times about upgrading stocks, and I hope someday to do a build as well. But the last thing I would want is to put a bunch of work into a stock, get it just the way I want it, and then split the wrist on it... :(

What do you experts have to say?

I wouldn't be too concerned about adding a crossbolt until you were generating significant recoil. I have a crossbolt on my 9.3X64, but not on my .358. The .350 RM has a crossbolt, but not the 35 Whelen. For sure, there isn't need to add a crossbolt to a 270, a 280 or a 30-06. My 300 WSM doesn't need a crossbolt.
