Here is where I am at the moment.

IMG_9349.jpg

Jerry and I had a ball today shooting. He was working with his 338Win Mag Vanguard and I was working with my 340Wby. Much more has been done outside of what I am going to post today. My focus at the moment is on the 250gr bullets. I have tested 200gr SST and they average 3204fps and are 9/8" -1 1/2" in group size. I have tried 210gr Partitons and 215gr SBT but accuracy is not what I want but velocities were there.

Now, my rifle is a fast rifle, when compared to Weatherby factory balllistics shooting Weatherby ammo which list the 250gr Partition moving 2941fps and my rifle with this ammo recorded and average of 2990fps.

It is shooting Accubonds and Partitions very well but not settled on a load yet, lots of work to still do. Will also be testing the 250gr SBT.

Here are the results of the two best AccuBond loads form my work so far.

Group size is .657" moving at 2913fps

Group size is .910" moving at 2917fps

Here is the result of the Weatherby Factory ammo 250gr Partition

Three shot Group size is .437" moving at 2990fps

Five shot Group size is .727" moving at 2990fps

I dont see anything wrong with those groups bullet, good job!

Seems to throw 1 out is the only thing I notice. Seating depth or primer switch might change those.

250's at dang near 3000fps will put the hurt on things real quick like.

Yes, there is a lot of potential in this rifle. :)

Mike,

Nice shooting! Your results mirror mine, the 250 gr PT shoots faster than the 250 gr AB. My Retumbo load gets 3024 fps with the PT and 2940 fps with the AB.

It will be interesting because I am 2grs below max at the moment with the Accubonds and have not loaded my own Partitions yet.

Wish I had guts enough to stand behind a rifle that could push that much lead that fast.....or do I..... Cool but, ouch! CL

Thanks POP, this will be one cool rifle indeed.

Cloverleaf, it is not bad at all at the bench considering I do not have a brake on the rifle. When you practice correct posture at the bench sitting straight up and not leaning into the rifle it is very easy to shoot in my opinion and I love to launch one of those 250gr bullets down range. It really is a fun rifle all the way around. If recoil was that much of a factor, I could not be shooting five shot groups like that.

Mike,

You have to shoot a couple from prone to get the full effect.

I just look stupid JD338, but I am not that stupid!!!! Now that said, I will be practicing from that position my way, with my special back pack I use in the mountains with a little pad I always put between my collar bone and the butt pad.

Mike,

I was just funning with ya. I shoot my RUM from prone and its not bad.
In all honesty, if you can shoot from the bench, prone won't be a problem.
The pad is a good idea and when its show time this fall, a prone shot will be a piece of cake.

I believe you are right about that.

Bullet,

Considering your shooting a cannon at almost 3000 fps, I think your doing real good, great actually.

Rock on Bullet.....

Thanks nodak7mm, sure hope I can get mine to shoot like GB300wm's 300Win Mag Vanguard. I am looking for one of those groups, an exaggerated hole. He did his with a 215gr Sierra SBT, but I want to do one with a 250gr bullet. :)

Mike,

How about one of your famous cartridge pictures of the 340 Wby with a 250 gr AB.

OK!!!! one will be come soon.

Bullet, the whole setup is very nice & the accuracy you are getting is just iceing on the cake. Looks like a 1/2 minute rifle in the making.

That is my impression at the moment also and that will be one fine hunting rifle with that accuracy.

Great shooting Mike! That 250 looks like alot of power and the accuracy is very good. Good luck. Scotty
