I've had this 700 VSSF in my safe for 12 years.
I've killed I don't know how many deer with it.
Today I decided to try loading a bullet into the lands.
Roy would be proud !!!
It's got so much freebore I couldn't hit the lands with a 175 SMK.

I took some new Lapua brass out of the box.
Did nothing other than chamfer and debut it.
Primed it.
Dumped 45 grains of Varget in them and seated the bullets.
Measured the OAL and wrote it all down in my logbook.
Went to the bench on the 200 yard range.
Looked at the wind flags and started shooting.

Dang trigger monkey showed up and ruined a perfect group

Gotta hate those monkeys, best three hundred yard group I ever shot was a four shot group. I fired through fourth shot took a look and quit right there, I knew the monkeys were close. Glad you wrote it all down certainly she's a shooter.

Thats some mighty fine shooting at 200 yrds HTDUCK. That trigger monkey has had his way with me too. More often than I want to admit.

Looks pretty good, even with the monkey hanging 'round the bench.

My 700 BDL in 270 win also has a HUGE amount of freebore. What really stinks is I have a huge magazine well, with all the room in the world to seat bullets out further. But unless I want to leave 1 mm of bullet in the neck I can't even get close. :?

Shoots well though!

Good shooting BTW!

Howard that is a great group!!! Congratulations on some very fine shooting. !!!!

My 308 rem vtr also has a ton of freebore....and NO extra magazine room to help get close.
But its still a good shooter w/a number of loads...kind of anxious to try the 190 lrab....seems like the lrab's are liking some jump.

I've owned a lot of Remington 700's...they all had throats like a giraffe...most were very accurate too, the ones that weren't were newer ones (2008 and later)

Yeah, the boring old .308 and 30-06 guns. They aren't so sexy, no fancy gunwriters singing their praises. They just shoot tiny groups and fill freezers year after year.

I still miss my Rem 788 .308 gun. Wore the thing out back when quality 7.62 surplus was cheap, sold it for parts. Fell for the .280 bug. I love my .280 but still have warm feelings for the round. If the 8mm I'm building doesn't shoot up to par, it will probably get a .308 tube. Then I can have the best of all possible worlds. A well broken-in CRF Mauser 98 .308 with a throat and magazine long enough to run high BC 165-190 gr bullets out to their full potential. Or I might just set it up to standard throat and kill deer with 150 gr BTs all day long.

Get rid of it.

You missed the orange dot with all five shots!

I'm finally leaving sexy and going with some reliable standard calibers.

Good advice for one's love life too! Yeah, a girl in a skimpy 2 piece is sexy, but not puttin' food on the table sexy!

Yeah, the Rem 700's chambered for .308 Win have long been chambered to take about a 400 grain .30 cal bullet...

Even so, they seem to shoot real well.

When you wear out that barrel, get one with a shorter throat.

That made me giggle.
A 400 gr bullet ? Wow !

Trust me if I ever shoot this barrel out it's getting a new one from Kreiger, Shilen, Brux somebody.

In my current state, of non-hiking, walking, riding nor doing much of anything, I have been using the opportunity to go through my "stuff" and clean up and organize. In total I have prepped for loading over 300 cases. The majority of those have been .308, they are a joy to work with. Especially when full length resizing. Additionally I have loaded about 100 rounds, mostly 300 WM. Some STW, 223 and .308. I still have not finalized my most "accurate" 308 load as yet. I have three different case manufactures, and want to determine the best load for each case.
My best guess right now it will be around 44 gr of Varget and 168 gr. bullet. Most accurate to date with a three shot ".287", is the 168 Matchking, in the Laupa case with a CCI Mag primer
