I have been over run with ground squirrls the last couple of years and have decreased their numbers with a rat trap put on their runways. But this summer there is one that is too smart for the trap so I thought I'd try the Red Ryder BB gun. Hit him smack in the side and it did not even phase him.
One of the boys mentioned a pellet gun...seemed like a good idea so I picked one up today. A Crosman Storm XT. A break open single shot; came with a crappy scope and the worse rings I have ever seen. I put them on and decided to sight it in. Took a double layer of fairly heavy cardboard and an old hollow core door (that I put on my saw horses) and leaned them up a few feet from the garage. Now it is not kosher to shoot BB or pellet guns in town, but drastic situations call for drastic measures, so I had to be Very Careful...... Anyway, the 1st shot (at about 15 yds) was 5" high. Adjusted the scope and the next shot was about 2" high. Adjusted again and then thought I would check what kind of penetration I was getting.....hmmmmmmm..........both shots went thru the cardboard, thru the door and thru the garage wall......DARN KID ANYWAY!
About an hour later that ground squirrel came out, so I snuck out the door, took a peek around to make sure the coast was clear, and tacked him. He dropped like a rock. But I now have another hole in the garage wall. So I just put a 1/4 sheet of 3/4" plywood against the garage, behind where the buggers like to perch and hopefully it will stop a .177 pellet.
Yep, darn kid anyway!!!!
