I have been over run with ground squirrls the last couple of years and have decreased their numbers with a rat trap put on their runways. But this summer there is one that is too smart for the trap so I thought I'd try the Red Ryder BB gun. Hit him smack in the side and it did not even phase him.

One of the boys mentioned a pellet gun...seemed like a good idea so I picked one up today. A Crosman Storm XT. A break open single shot; came with a crappy scope and the worse rings I have ever seen. I put them on and decided to sight it in. Took a double layer of fairly heavy cardboard and an old hollow core door (that I put on my saw horses) and leaned them up a few feet from the garage. Now it is not kosher to shoot BB or pellet guns in town, but drastic situations call for drastic measures, so I had to be Very Careful...... Anyway, the 1st shot (at about 15 yds) was 5" high. Adjusted the scope and the next shot was about 2" high. Adjusted again and then thought I would check what kind of penetration I was getting.....hmmmmmmm..........both shots went thru the cardboard, thru the door and thru the garage wall......DARN KID ANYWAY!

About an hour later that ground squirrel came out, so I snuck out the door, took a peek around to make sure the coast was clear, and tacked him. He dropped like a rock. But I now have another hole in the garage wall. So I just put a 1/4 sheet of 3/4" plywood against the garage, behind where the buggers like to perch and hopefully it will stop a .177 pellet.

Yep, darn kid anyway!!!!

Boys will be boys.

I am laying low for a red squirrel. My Remington M541 HB is loaded up with 22 LR Yellow Jackets. I don't live in town so I can use a little more gun.

Air rifles, they can be pretty powerful for a springloaded device.
Good job on the pest control.

I took one into my buddies barn (same barn I posted a picture of a pigeon getting the Nosler treatment on) that had bout 20 pigeons in the loft. I went in there at 3 AM and put down all of them, no more feathered rats crapping on everything........

Yep, we moved into town because of kids sports, band, church and work activities etc..... but there is definitely a down side to being in town too.

I hope there aren't any holes in that barn roof

Longwinters,

It's only right to blame the kids. We got blamed for every digression of our parents when we were kids. Its their turn. It'll build character.

Yeh, but these boys are 20 and 23. Infact the 23 yr old is getting married next weekent. But the 20 year old got me 20% off of the pellet rifle from the sporting goods store he works at...so I hold him more responsible  .

They both thought it quite humorous that their dad did the dirty deed. And like I always taught them..."if you're going to be dumb ya gotta be tough" Or in my case, fix the holes in the garage wall.

Long,

I did a similar thing when I was a kid. My Dad set up an archery range in the garage. I had a Bear Tomcat 35 lb recurve. It still had enough power to go through the target and the garage wood siding.

My Dad was not too happy, even after I pointed out that I had a nice group!

Ah, the days.......

In about 1992:

I can't recall if I shot it or one of my friends shot into the chicken fence and lo and behold firmly attached fair sized broiler chicken to the wall of the koop.

You can guess where that ended up. I was about 12 and old enough to know I was in trouble, but not smart enough to own up to it. That story ended in the woodshed and I wasn't foolish enough to hide it when I screwed up after. Quite funny in recollection now.

I think we tried to hide it under a rock in the chicken fence, wasn't really natural and my dad seen right thro it.

Yep- that living in town just sucks as far as Im concerned. Live in a town hse so my "yard" is about 20yds x 10yds and I live across the yard from a card carrying PETA member. Had five rabbits chasin each other around that little square of turf most of the spring. They ate everything out of my "flower pot garden". The car parked on the street gives me a ten yard field of fire with the house as a backstop. Now I aint sayin' I did, but I aint sayin I didnt. I am certain that my 760 will not go end to end through a rabbit though. I did have a lot of experience shinning Jacks in my youth...... .
Sounds me like the young fellas put you on to a good rifle. A better scope will give you more options for safe shots. Dad used to anchor ferral cats in town from the kitchen window. But that was 30+ years ago. Times have changed and not all for the better. CL

I can use a 12 gauge on my land here but my dad just sent me my RWS 350 magnum I bought was visiting in Greece last year. 1250 fps pellet gun.
