All,
Caught some grief about not telling this story. So, here it is/
Talk about lucky. My daughter, the one that doesn't shoot, but is not against it, agreed to a hog hunt. However, as much as I wanted, she decided to hunt with her uncle. This was a stand hunt in texas, and after picking a stand, and doing some prep work in terms of clearing, she settled in with her Uncle Dave for a hunt.

What a time! Annelise saw a lot of smaller pigs, but absolutely refused to shoot a small cute pig! In fact, she kind of enjoyed watching them. But when the big ugly pig came our and chased the little ones off of the corn, she decided that that mean pig deserved to get shot. Not to be outdone by any boy, she decided to earhole the pig with a small (0.17) cal rifle, with my brother shooting backup with a .300 weatherby mag.

She shot, and the pig dropped like a stone. I came and got them a bit later, with camera in hand, but she insisted that we take her back to camp so she could clean up, take off the camo, and put on make-up. Small price to pay, so I did that. Here is the result.

By the way, she likes to hunt, but we don't get to go often due to her rather busy social schedule. But, any boy better watch himself, she shoots well. and so do her 3 brothers. not to mention dad, Uncles, cousins, and so on...
Keep the heritage alive, take a kid hunting!!!

Great story! 8)

Hardpan,

You have a lovely daughter, and it is apparent that she is capable of taking care of herself. Congratulations to you both. She did a fine job on that porker.

Hardpan, Great hunt. Your daughter did great. Was the pig in the 200 range. His tusk looks 6 to 7 inches.

Russ,
Good guess on the weight. Just over 200... around 225. The tusks are good, not sure how long. I did a skull mount, but Annelise insists that it stay at the ranch and not in her room, so I cannot measure them.

I think that her boyfriend is a little apprehensive about her shooting. She outshot him the other day on the first set, and then told him that she will not shoot in front of him again until he can beat her group. (about 1.25 inches at a 100 yds )

Life is good. I guess the part that I am so happy about is that my wife is in favor of hunting in spite of being raised by anti hunters, and that she also encourages the kids to hunt! One way to win the culture war is to take the kids outdoors, hunting, fishing and camping; and make sure that each experience is a happy one. Our family treasures those times together, and we have 4 kids and a wife that are now very much in favor of hunting and the outdoors in general.

Now, back to reloading and getting a new gun to group!
Hardpan.

Hardpan,

I know what you mean about taking the children hunting and fishing. Both of my daughters accompanied me fishing for many years, and the younger of the two was a far better fisherman than many of my partners. My eldest daughter simply enjoyed wading the river with me, just to see nature and to be present. My son was quite the outdoorsman, as well. Today, the kids love game and the outdoors. I introduced my son-in-law to fishing, and he became very effective with a fly rod. It is a great opportunity with a very narrow window to introduce the next generation to the joy of God's creation.
