My pet deer rifle is a Marlin 1895 with a Leupold VX3 1.5-5. I have worked up a load of 51 grains of H4198 with the 458/300 Partition. I get 2200 fps and it is Northest deer woods accurate. +2/-3" point blank range is 170 yards, father than I will likely shoot in Maine or New Hamshire. This load is derived from two sources, the Nosler manual with the I4198 load, and the Hodgdon manual with the 56 gr load behind a Sierra 300 HP. I started with 52 grains and backed off one when I got more velocity than I expected. Question for the Nosler bunch: Safe load?
I have only tried RL7 in addition to H4198, the 4198 was more consistant. General comment: could you show more loads with Hodgdon powders in your next manual? Anyone else out there load for the .45/70? Comments welcomed.
Thanks

joe,

I do not have a 45-70 yet, but my research has found that you have listed the right powders for 300 gr bullets.
You do have yourself a deer thumper!

I plan on having a 1895 45-70 this year.

Try RL 7 about 52 gr or so (max in mine)
H4198 will be discontinued!

Pop,

What kind of accuracy are you getting from your rifle?

Joe-Safe load according to Hodgdons. On the old Marlin Talk a fella loaded the 300 Nosler PP to 2282 fps in a Guide Gun with "H-4198" Starline Nickel brass and I forget the primer. He got such a rash of poop from changing componants from Hodgdons data,He e-mailed Hodgdons and called them and the reply he(Hodgdons) posted and I saved, was basically that is a safe load for his rifle.

If you have more doubt, whistle and I will post Hodgdons reply. The 300 Nosler PP is a good one but I still would love to see a 350 Nosler.

Group to the right. 3 shots (300 Nosler PT/RL 7 45-70) at 100 yds.

Group measured edge to edge at .55.....
Now if you subtract .308....
well, you do the math!

Pop,

Nice group!

Group measures .550" - .308"? did you mean .458"?

Either way, better than some varmit/target rifles.

Maybe thats MY problem! And I was just worried about a
detached retina.

I think a M1895 45-70 w/ a 300 gr PT would be just the
ticket for hunting Black Bear over bait in the cedar swamp.
I felt a little silly shooting a 200 lb bear last fall with my
338 RUM at 30 feet.

Thanks buddy!

JD338,

If I regularly hunted black bear in cedar swamps, I think I would get a Super Redhawk in 480 Ruger. But you are right that the 45/70 would be potent medicine. I dropped a nice 8-point at 120 paces. Shot him thru the shoulder from a front angle. The Partition came out the other side about half way back. That buck dropped where it stood and never even twitched. I thought I had missed until I found a patch of brown thru the binocs. I imagine a bear that was double-lungged would not go far either.
The Marlin 1895 is a fun gun to shoot. If your hand is a large as mine, you might want to get an aftermarket lever. I could only get the middle 2 fingers in the lever when wearing heavy hunting gloves (necessary in Maine 3d week of the season) . I bought the DRG glove Loop Lever. Works great and looks good too. Happy hunting.

Joe,

Every animal I have shot with my 338RUM has dropped in their tracks.
The one exception was a 200 lb WT Deer (9 pt). I hit him with a 250 gr PT tight behind the right shoulder, he reared and turned a 180 and fell over dead!

The 45-70 is perfect for cedar swamp hunting. I would think you would get a nice big exit hole leaking lots of blood, should you have to track at all.
Thanks for the heads up on the DRG glove Loop Lever.
