E.R SHAW Rifle Barrels

I just did a little comparing, and you could get a stainless barrel, installed on your action, from Douglas (XX, Air gauged barrel) for about $100 more than the cost of a stainless Shaw barrel installed on your action. I'd spend the extra $100 on the Douglas, all day long.

As far as your 257 goes, you really have to watch the twist rate. Did you try a range of different bullet weights? I had my 243 rebarreled by them last year and it can shoot 1/2" all day with the right bullets. But since I didn't get the fast twist rate the VLD bullets keyhole or don't shoot as well. There's a lot that goes into a gun, if you get a barrel only the smith has to install it properly.

If it's going to be on a hunting rifle, you should be ok, but on the other hand if this is a one time deal, spend the extra on one that's mentioned above. I looked and read every review I could find on barrels before getting my Remington done. Ended up with a Bartlien, SS #3 contour with the 5R rifling, VERY nice, I have a little over $600 into mine, that's complete, with a local smith threading, Chambering, crowning, he also squared the receiver and lapped the lugs in,,

Years ago I had them rebarrel and reblue a winchester 70 push feed to 35 whelen for my dad. It turned out very nice, and regularly turns in .75-1” groups. I haven’t looked into them in a while but if thier prices have increase I would highly recomend douglas. Its about the same or a little lower priced tham most and I after using or seeing use douglas barrels in a hundred plus barrels I have not seen one yet that wouldn’t shoot if screwed on straight.

There are a lot of really good barrel makers out there now. Keep an eye on ebay, there are usually a few decent blanks on there at any given time. I got a bartlien for 300 dollars on there for my 308 build.

Id be careful of Ebay. If you get a barrel off of there its going to be 100% as is. I don't think any manufacturer would offer any sort of warranty on that?

It's too cheap to order a barrel from a top company and get it done right the first time. The amount of frustration and cost to have a dud isn't worth it. Take Pac-Nor Brux Bartlein Hart Krieger Lilja.

Right now a Shaw in 4140 is $180. I don't think any of those other guys will even touch that price?

Nope. You're right. They won't.
I put a Shaw barrel on a Savage build a few months ago and it's ok.
I'm having two actions barreled currently and they're both at Pac-Nor. Enough said?
(By the way, the actual barrel price difference between those two is $80 each)

I just priced the same chambered, hubbed, and contoured barrel from Pac-Nor and Shaw. $180 vs $400, shipping/taxes not included. That is way more than $80, its over double?

Is this for a Savage? The last quote I received from Pac-Nor on a Savage barrel threaded, chambered and ready to install was 260. Thus my previous post.
FWIW, I just received a CZ24(Mauser) action barreled from Pac-Nor and it seems to be great. Only a few rounds down the tube but shooting well. Now it was more than the 260 but I had them lap, true and barrel the action.
Buy the Shaw if that is what you like. I have zero issues with that. Have no issue with anyone doing whatever they want with their money. Just trying to help a little. My results on two of their barrels have been ok but less ok than with other barrel makers, that's all.

This is for a Remington 700. Pac-Nor's builder says $275 for a blank and add $125 for hub threads and chambering.
