Have they started putting relief bands on the newer E-Tips? I heard a rumour of such things, if so are velocitys up some.

I have not seen anything like this yet.
That said do not get too excited. Grooves make for lower ballistic coefficients because of the drag factor. So in reality I doubt that you will be able to tell the difference.

The Trophy Copper that Federal loads appears to be an E-Tip specially made for Federal. These bullets do have relief grooves cut in them. I suspect this is the source of any rumor concerning redesign of the E-Tip.

Like I said Doc, I have not heard anything, however that does not mean they are not in the works.

I have had no problems with excessive copper deposits in the barrel or with pressure when using E-Tips. I do like them.

I've tried E-Tips in two rifles - my 270Wby and 300Wby. In both rifles, the E-Tips foul like traditional cup/core bullets, and I'm able to safely achieve velocities in line with cup/core bullets of the same weight. I see no need for relief grooves. Even Hornady has noted some issues with pressure differences between their SST/Interbonds and the GMX, despite initial marketing claims you could switch from lead to lead-free without changing your load data. Relief grooves are not the cure-all, and they bring their own hazards.

The E Tip isn't pure copper like the Barnes, so that would explain the lower sensitivity and fouling I've seen while using them. They are very accurate in my .280. Hits like a freight train. :)

I agree Fotis.
It's trade off, if that.
