I'm wondering if a 150 or 168 grain E-tip would work better on cow/spike elk at 30-06 speeds?
Specifically from any angle I may encounter, 300 yards is my max shooting range right now and in the near future.

Corey

I would say to load it to whatever shoots the best in your rifle. I would assume you are talking about loading down a magnum. I use a savage 30-06 and my best loads are always max or near max(starting with the min of course). I shot a big cow moose with mine this year.

Corey,

I'd lean toward using the 168. The extra mass is insurance for penetrating the muscle of an elk.

Elk are pretty tough critters, but that E Tip is one tough bullet. I would think that either one would work. With the amount of weight they retain they poke a deep hole, so I would go with what your gun shoots best.

This would actually be for my 30-06 Tikka T3 lite, which I'm thinking of using this year for elk, that is if I can get a new scope for it. I guess I will have to buy a box of each and try them out, was hoping to avoid that, but so goes the life of a reloader.

Thanks,
Corey

Yeah I would love to get 2900 fps out of my Tikka, but so far the fastest I can get a 165 going is mid 2800 but I guess that is not to big of a difference.

Corey

A 168 grain E-Tip at 2800 fps will serve admirably to permit you to put your tag on an elk. You should be able to find the accuracy required without too much trouble. Keep us posted as you develop your loads for the Tikka.

Thanks. Hopefully I can get an e-tip to go that fast, I'm a bit worried it will though. My barrel has proven to be a slow barrel.

I would also recommend the 168 gr E-Tip in your 30-06 for elk. My buddy and his son each shot cow elk with this same bullet in a 30-06 AI and performance was top notch.

That gives me hope, that was what I was hoping to hear. Any idea what kind of velocity they are getting?

Corey

Corey,

I don't recall velocity but he was using 30-06 MAX loads which were 30-06 AI starting loads. As I recall, one was a hard quartering shot and the 168 gr E-Tip went through a lot of elk and still extited.

Do a search as I think I gave the details in an earlier post.

Thanks I found it. And it looks promising.

That 168gr ET at 2800 would suit pretty much everybody in NA for just about anything. That is great speed and that bullet will act more like a 200gr bullet than a 180 for penetration. I get caught up with speed too sometimes, but really, 100FPS really doesn't make a difference until you are pushing the hunting envelope. I would imagine it is still carrying 1500Ftlbs out to 500 or so though. That is still pretty capable. Scotty

168 should not be any problem at all. In fact, the Partition or ab would be fine as well. IMHO, the Partition is a really hard bullet to beat, even though I shoot a lot of accubonds. Even at lower velocities, you should shoot what works well in your gun, and work on shot placement. Again, IMHO, bullet placement is a lot more important than e-tip vs AB vs Partition.
