270 mimics 7mm Rem Mag with 150 factory!

Considering I used a 270 with a 19 inch barrel to take 2 elk and as I usually used it as a loaner rifle it took 4 more elk all using the 150 grain Speer Hotcor running just a bit over 2700 fps I see no reason a Partition at 3000 fps wouldn't be awesome. Is recoil gaining ground at the same pace velocity is? I'd bet in a light 270 & mag velocity and a 150 is pretty noticeable.

This is my favorite load from my Model 70 FTWGT in 270

Many years ago Winchester came out with Winchester Magnum Rifle (WMR) powder. I tried some in my .270 Win., an FN Mauser with 24" barrel. A nice man at the range let me run the load I'd worked up with WMR and the average velocity was 2,999 FPS for five shots. The groups was just slightly larger than half inch. HOLY COW! This from a rather lightweight rifle with a barrel like a soda straw. The only fault that rifle has was the stock was ugly enough to abort a lady crocodile. Considering how that rifle shot I didn't change anything. The fellow with the chronograph offered me what would have been a substantial profit but I decided to keep it.
A few years later I bought a chrongraph of my own and ran that .270 over it and found the velocity to be closer to 2850 FPS and sometimes 2800 FPS However, the 2850 stayed reasonably constant over my chronograph as well as a few others owned by friends. Temp were for the most part 100 to as high a 115 during the summer which it when I tested load work ups. Never did shoot that .270 in really cold weather on a hunt.

However, I have shot my .280 Rem. and .300 Win. Mag. using WMR at the range in Raton New Mexico with temps running from +4 to +14 degrees with no apparent change in point of impact. I also found that it wasn't worth a damn in the 30-06. Great in the .270 and .300 Win. Mag but highly erratic in the 06.

What little work I have done with RL17 has been with the 7x57 Mauser using the 150 gr. Nosler Partition running with 7-08 data in a Winchester M70 Featherweight, Ruger #1 and a custom based on an FN commercial Mauser action. Accuracy has been quite good, especially in the FWY and brass after ten or so reloads still hold the primers nice and tight. What's not to like? As Alliant is not selling powder to use peons, what might be a good substitute for RL17? Need to find one for RL15 as well.

Not really, the stock design really helps. I shoot it in a tee shirt.

A well chosen bullet and a solid 270 reload gives up nothing to a factory loaded 7 RM. It does let you pack one more cartridge in your rifles magazine 😁
