7mm Rem Mag - 150 gr TTSX or E=Tip

I recently purchased a used Rem 700 min 7mm Rem Mag. Someone had gone to great pains and done some excellent work customizing this rifle to be a very light weight "Mountain Rifle" type, I surmise. It has a pencil thin, 22 in barrel, very lightweight synthetic stock, Control mounts and excellent Canjar trigger. All together, scope, rifle and sling weigh in at 7.5 lbs. While I know 22" is not optimum for a 7 Mag, I decided to try a few handloads and see how it shot. using 150 NBT's and Nosler's recommended load of VVN-160, I got a 3 shot group hovering at .8 inches and 2900 fps. I would like to work up an elk load for this rifle for a possible elk hunt next Oct. I would like to substitute either 150 gr TTSX or 150 gr Nosler E-tips, which I have in my stocks. Do you think I can work up a load that will achieve the same velocity (2900 FPS) with either of these bullets, given the difference in construction? I can always buy some 150 gr Accubonds and pretty much sub for the NBT's but think the monolithics might be better for elk.

Any comments or suggestions? Any preference between TTSX or E-tips, other than individual rifle preference?
 
QL projection indicates that the E-Tip will give you excellent velocity.

As an aside, the 150 grain AB will work just fine for elk. I've used the 150 grain ABLR on elk from my 280, and I can assure you that the elk didn't like it at all. The bullet gave complete penetration and resulted in a DRT elk.

So, Dr Mike, if I'm reading that properly, about 3,000 fps for a good 150 gr bullet from the 7mm mag with a 22" barrel?

That's the projection, Guy. It is pretty much in line with what the Nosler and the Barnes manuals project for 150 grain E-Tip and TSX, adjusting for 24" barrels. I do note that some of those loads are tightly compressed, which may be a non-starter for some.
 
Not that those two wouldn't work excellent, my partner used the 150 Swift Scirocco this fall at 2950. Two elk, one at 475 and the other at 150'ish. Recovered Bullets looked the same and killed VERY well.

Since you have a great BT load I'd try a 150 Partition. Chances are it may shoot the same and I'd be less worried about that bullet opening up further down range than a mono.
 
I like Nosler bullets but not the S-tip. Too much like the old Barnes X-Bullet.

The TTSX is my choice and if you follow a few(4) simple rules you will get great accuracy and terminal performance.

Excellent advice! I'd tend to lean that way if possible.
 
Dad uses the 150 TTSX in his 7mm Weatherby at 3060 fps, 26 inch barrel. It's not a max load at all, but it's accurate and deadly. There is probably another node another 3% higher and closer to 3200 fps, but I decided that we will go with what we've got since it's working.
 
Not a doggone thing wrong with a good 7mm 150'ish grain bullet at roughly 3,000 fps. (y)
