Heading for the gun store tomorrow and I'm not sure what I will find, so have some questions. What is the effective range of the Rem 35 and the 45-70?

In comparing recoil, what would the .35 and the 45-70 compare to? 30-06, 300 win etc...

Thanks,

Long

IMHO, the 35 Rem is a 150 yd deer round, The Remington 200 gr SPCL is the best bullet but velocity/reliable expansion factors in past 150 yds.
I have shot my 1895 Guide gun 45-70 at 300 yds with amazing accuracy. With the 300 gr BST, it is an easy 200 yd deer rifle.
As for recoil, the 35 Rem is pretty mild a,d similar to a 300 Savage. The 45-70 factory loads are for trap door rifles and recoil is pretty mild. You can load a 405 gr bullet up to 1850 fps and it will get your attention but it is not severe.
Take a hard look at the 45-70, its perfect for hunting in the UP.

I would say 200yds for each cartridge. I know that the old 45/70 killed bufflers way way out there with heavy cast though.

Recoil - 35 Rem is pretty much 30/30 recoil. 45/70, well that depends on your flavor of load. Factory loads are about like a 20 gauge, you can handload them from 223 levels to 375 H&H levels.

I have both and love both, my advice, get both. :) LOL

With the Hornady loads for each the 35 Rem is a fair bit faster than the 45/70 but I wonder how they both would compare with good handloads. I have always liked the 35 Rem maybe one day I will have to get one it seems like a great deer cartridge that could kill bigger game too if necessary. Owned a Ruger No.1 45/70 for a while the standard 300 gr factory loads kicked about like a 30-06. I have fired some hot loaded Marlin Guide guns and would prefer to shoot my 375 Ruger instead. Those Guide guns just don't fit me well and are painful to shoot, you may have no such problems.

Thanks for the info guys. I was also thinking about the 308 Marlin in the lever.

JD, what year is your Guide gun? Sounds like it shoots great but I've read that some are not happy since Remington bought them out.

Not sure of the year but long before Remington bought Marlin.
Look on Marlin Owners, I think the Remlin issues are gone and they are producing a fine rifle.

Same here! I'm with Heath. Both are great rounds. I love them both for close up hunting. I have the 35 Rem in a Marlin 336 and a 45-70 in a 1895. Both are great rifles and sure deer killers to 200. Neither one of them is a slouch in a good Marlin. Scotty

I've shot both and don't find the recoil level disturbing. The .35 is very similar to the 30-30, maybe just a little more- but recoil at this level barely rates talking about.

Bear in mind that the 45-70 is found in everything from 405gr loads suitable for an ancient Trapdoor, right on up to loads intended for the #1 Ruger that border on the level of a .458WM...recoil will be proportionate.

I have no issue with either being a solid 150 to 200yd cartridge in a good rifle but to me the real utility of such rounds is closer in due to the flat bullets that lose steam quickly. Hot loaded 45-70s are great cartridges in brush and I've seen several impressive critters anchored solidly with them.

The .308 Marlin is a real non starter in my opinion....if you want that kind of reach in a lever action- a Browning BLR, defunct Winchester 88 or Savage 99 in any of several cartridges will get better results.
