Yvette and I drove up to the upper ranch today.
Not sure we would make it with the snow but why not.
We saw our first elk down on the county road, a herd about 100 strong.
From there we were about a mile from the property line.
Made it, so far so good.
Got out to open a gate, looked up on a hill about 500 yards. Six wolves.Damn they are big.
We made it another mile and hit 8 foot snow drifts.
Hiked about 1/2 mile to the top of a knob. Never saw the wolves again. Topped out looking at 30 to 40 branch antler Bulls, kept trying for a good count but they were moving around too much. A few were real monsters. no idea how many cows. The elk were about 600 yards away on a big flat.
Not bad for a 3 hour Sunday drive.
I need to get a phone scope!

That is a great Sunday adventure  are you allowed to take Wolves as predators or do you need a licence?

Blessings,
Dan

Sounds as if it was a great afternoon. Never get enough of seeing these wonderful creatures free and wild. I always love seeing wolves and elk still give me a start.

Shoot a wolf in Oregon you're going to be in trouble. Not that the pack we saw gave us an opportunity. The wolf population has exploded in northeast Oregon. The elk herd in our area is half of what it was 10 years ago.
There is some effort coming out of fish and wildlife to get them under control, they have killed some small packs for killing livestock. Other then that I'm not optimistic we will see much change in that regard.
I guess I wouldn't mind a few wolfs running around, if nothing else a healthy ecosystem has a healthy predator population.

What I really regret is I haven't bought the adapter so I can take photos through my spotting scope. The wolves were neat, but I have never seen so many Bulls in my life, and I've been poking around Ne. Oregon for most of 60 years.

Awesome!
I'm looking at AZ for 2017. Thinking I might do a pack in hunt and go horse far.

Go to the website and get it ordered -- will be the best $60 you've spent in a long time. Pretty cool accessory for the spotter. I've got some great pix and video of animals at well over a mile away.
