I'll be buying an elk preference point for AZ this year given that I have a moose hunt in Newfoundland.
I can't take the time to hunt moose, deer, and elk this year and it would really be too much meat in the freezer if I was successful in all three.
I'm planning to hunt elk next year in Wyoming and Arizona if all goes well. I should have enough points to get drawn in both states.
I'll hunt deer here in Arizona of course. [emoji4]
If you haven't done so, and think you may want to hunt Arizona for elk at some point, I'd recommend buying a point every year. The bad thing is non residents have to buy a hunting and fishing combo license instead of just a hunting license to be able to buy a point.

Doesn't buying a point in AZ cost a nonresident $150 or more (because of the license fee)?

I would love to hunt elk in AZ one day, but I can't bring myself to buy 16-18 years worth of points at $150 each (for a top unit). I'm not trying to attack Arizona or anyone who does that, I would just choose a hunt in Utah, Wyoming, Montana, or British Columbia instead.

Yes, it does cost more, a lot more, for a non resident to buy points in Arizona.

I've known a few guys that buy a point and come out to hunt deer most years to help justify the expense of the license. I'm lucky in that I'm a resident. [emoji2]

I need to start buying points places, though. I need to start figuring out how to get an elk tag in the Utah San Juan unit. And a Maine moose tag.

Right now I'm content to just buy points, and hunt, in Arizona and Wyoming.
For opportunities to hunt I favor Wyoming but it's Arizona that is known for those wall hanger trophies. The reason I hunt here is because I'm a resident. :)

Buying points in any state really isn't cheap, but it's sorta the game we have to play in order to hunt them darned elk some of us are so addicted too.. I have an Arizona ID card, wonder if that would work for the licensing as a military non resident? Got the ID back when I was stationed in Az for a few months.

Vince. This is probably a dumb question but have you taken the Hunter Ed class here in AZ? That automatically gives a bonus point for all species of big game in the state and it's one you never lose after you've used it.

That's true Paul.
I've been unable to find the time to take the class but that will change shortly.

You would be swearing that you are a resident and that you reside here.

While there may be financial advantages to putting in as a resident the ethical quandry is one you yourself will have to deal with.

Scotty, I believe you have to be currently stationed or tdy here to get the resident license prices. The best deal is to purchase a lifetime license, which gives you resident Status for the draw, even if you currently reside in a different state.

Gotcha, makes sense. I'll have to give them a call and see. I know some other Western states allow Active Military to hunt with resident prices, even if they are out of state'ers..
