Enduron Powder in the .270WIn.

I'm getting ready to start working with my son's Tikka 270. He's interested in learning some loading techniques and has started accompanying me to the range and sending centerfire rounds downrange now that his small bore team has adjourned until next year.

I'm very tempted to just get some IMR or H4831 or 4350 and keep rocking on, but the temperature stability of the Enduron powders has me thinking that I might want to try these.

Basically, you can find data for all four of the Enduron powder for the .270 Winchester...but which one?

I've got some 4166 (like Varget)...but that seems too fast for the .270...on the other end, 7977 (like H1000) seems too slow.

4451 is reportedly near 4350 and 4955 is near 4831...either should be good. With my current crop of rifles- burning up any of the powder won't be an issue if it's not great in the .270.

Anyone try any of these new powders in the .270?

If it bumps velocity in the 270 as well as it did in my 7mm Wby, it will be great.

Like you noted, it seems like "every" Enduron powder fits, so it's tough to know which one to choose.

In my 270 Win I tried IMR 4451 with 140's and while I didn't get great accuracy it's worth a try because you might.

I worked up with IMR 4955 and the 150 gr Speer and with no warning at all I got a blown primer, not sure what happened since I was below max still, could have been a weak brass. I would work up carefully just in case though.

IMR 7977 has been my favourite so far using 150 gr Ballistic Tips at over 2900 fps and the 160 gr Partition at 2817 fps from a 23" barrel. Good speed and accuracy with a mild amount of compression. I see no reason to stop using it with 2 excellent loads.

Great input Gerry... did you try any 130s in your load development with those powders?

Haven't tried the 130's. The lightest has been 140 gr bullets, I have been concentrating on 150's and heavier in my rifle. I know lots of people like the 130 gr bullets and they are great but I'll save that weight for my 260 Rem.

I've always gravitated to the 130gr in the .270WIN, for no other reason than that's what seems standard.

Maybe it's time I revisit that considering what can be the target animal in front of the muzzle. I've had good luck with the ELD-X in my 6.5. Maybe I'll try the 145gr version for the .270.

I have come close to trying the 145 gr ELD-X but haven't yet since the ELD-X seems to perform erratically, lots of reports where they work fine and then from the same box the next one turns to shrapnel. That said I'll still give them a try this year. Would like to try the 150 gr ABLR even more since they seem to have tweaked it to perform better than when first introduced.

Yes, back in 2015 with IMR-4451/140gr AB. I was looking for new loads/bullet back then and I settled on 150gr ABLR using IMR-7828ssc. I got good accuracy with it, groups less than 1" and it was par with load been hunting with, H-4350/140gr TSX. I used Hodgdon loading data for 4451.

I never did try 130gr. Good Luck.

I tried IMR7977 in the 270 Win. with the 150 BT. Results are shown below. I tried IMR4451 with the 140 BT's very briefly and think that combination showed a lot of promise but didn't continue to explore that route.

Nice Dan. For 4 shot groups any of those is a BG killer.

2900 with a 150BT is a good spot to be.

Finally decided on IMR4955 and the 145 ELDX...

Loaded the first ladder..54.0g, 55.0g, 56.0g, 56.5g, 57.0g.

If this winter storm will move out...it'll be time to pull the trigger and see how it works.

Made it to the range during a lull... beautiful day, 22F and bluebird sky with a nice layer of fresh snow.

I'm liking IMR4955 in the .270WIN. 57gr was too hot, I got stiff bolt lift and light ejector marks on the brass...accuracy also fell apart. 54gr was a very mild load, 55-56.5 all worked...56gr was the sweet spot. I'll do more testing around that.

That tightened right up for you. For sure, that 56.0 grain load looks good. It is by no means certain that 55.5 grains is statistically different from the sample size. That gives you a lot of wiggle room.

Remember the temps, 22 is normal for a lot of hunting but I be thoughtful and test around 70 for max pressure. I have never had any pressure signs with max listed loads at 60 and above and you have at 22 degrees. I am waiting on warm temps to shake out some 270 win loads using 140 PT's with H4813sc and V100. Powders I use for other cartridges are H4895, Bench Rest, Lilgun, H4891, TAC.
