Explain this to me PLZ

This obviously is an Angle Degree Indicator. I understand what it is suppose to do. My question is why the 2 sets of #'s?

The numbers are too big to big to put them all on one side so they put odd on one side and even on the other. If you look they split each other.

They're a single scale, but split to alternating sides of the needle to make enough room to keep the typeface readable. (Modern folks would call that a font...I guess my high school newspaper roots are showing, huh?) Notice it starts with 0 on the right, then 5 left, then 10 right, 15 left, 20 right, etc.
