Apolonius,

Welcome to the forum. What powders do you commonly have available? Here are some powders to consider; theses were generated from QuickLOAD.

Cartridge : .30-06 Spring. (SAAMI)
Bullet : .308, 180, CT FailSafe 53180
Useable Case Capaci: 59.452 grain H2O = 3.860 cm³
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 3.340 inch = 84.84 mm
Barrel Length : 22.0 inch = 558.8 mm

Predicted Data for Indicated Charges of the Following Powders.

Matching Maximum Pressure: 52500 psi, or 361 MPa

or a maximum loading ratio or filling of 109 %

These calculations refer to your specified settings in QuickLOAD 'Cartridge Dimensions' window.
C A U T I O N : any load listed can result in a powder charge that falls below minimum suggested
loads or exceeds maximum suggested loads as presented in current handloading manuals. Understand
that all of the listed powders can be unsuitable for the given combination of cartridge, bullet
and gun. Actual load order can vary, depending upon lot-to-lot powder and component variations.

Welcome to the forum.
The man thing since you're new to the forum is learning to tell the high pressure signs. Once you do that then you can start at the minimum recommended charge and slowly work up.

Thanks to all for your replys. And Merry Christmas to all.I hope after the holidays to get back to reloading and try some new things. And also lots of questions.Apolonius

Hi It is me again. With more questions. When a reloading data says C.O.L lets say 3.300" as a maximum. Is there a minimum? And why say the factory Winchester Supreme-fail safe 180 grain on 30-06 callibre is c.o.l 3.084".I do have a few in new boxes and i know this to be true. And they are very accurate.I use my Remington 700 BDL and they perform very good and they are deadly. And factory Remington same weight same callibre c.o.l is 3.220".I realise that i have to find the c.o.l for my gun by myself. But why with such a difference in c.o.l and the gun performs as good.Nosler book #6 gives as C.O.L for the same "type" of bullet 3.340".Is there a factor i need to know??I use Hodgdon powders and their data says c.o.l 3.300".And i do appreciate everyones help.

Apolonius,

There are two measurements that will become apparent as you load. The SAAMI (or CIP) OAL is stated as that which was presented by the firm that developed the round, submitting it to the regulating agency. This is the standard that is set for the round. However, because differing bullets are seated to different depths, and because chambers are sometimes cut out of spec, you will need a measurement for your own rifle. The various bullet/powder manufacturers provide a COL (also known as OAL) based on their own tests. This measurement gave the best results with the particular bullet/platform combination used. Generally, if you are using the data provided by such a guide, you can load to that particular OAL and the cartridge will fit your chamber. However, for accuracy sake, you may want to measure OAL for your rifle. Information for determining a more precise OAL is given in the Nosler No. 6 guide on page 43.

Thanks for your help Dr Mike.I know i have to do more reading and yes i do own the nosler #6.I know it takes time and playing it safe and talking to people will help.I still get my game but it is always a desire to do better.Happy new year.

I think you are in the company of fellows who want to do better on this forum, which makes it such a delightful place to hang out. Nobody here is so arrogant to imagine that they are delivering dicta from atop Mount Olympus, but rather they seek to learn all they can to be better hunters and riflemen.
