Fast 308 Winchester Load

Good article Guy. Nothing wrong with light bullets in the 308Win.

I've been shooting the 130gr Barnes TTSX with Benchmark for some time now. I get 3,130 ft/sec from the 22" Broughton barrel with surprising accuracy. It's not unusual to drop 3 bullets into a sub 2" cluster at 400yds. A frontal shot on an 8 point buck at 200yds dropped him like a brick. Fastest kill I've ever seen.

Guy,
Nice write up and video. You definitely know the 308 Win. I have dabbled with a couple of 308s but that may be changing. I will have to get with you when the time comes.

Thanks Jim, ya, I love the good ol' 308 cartridge and the Green Machine rifle as well.

I've had it a long time and shot an awful lot of rounds through it over the years.

The 30 cal 110g E-Tip is near identical length and shape as the 125g BT. Just saying.

Wingnut - that would be fun to try! I know that Nosler also makes a 125 grain AccuBond, and that Barnes makes a 130 grain TTSX. I think they also make a 110 grain TTSX... All of those should work even better on game.

Regards, Guy

I use the 110 gr E Tip in my 300 Blackout, impressive bullet.

I'd love to see a round nosed version of the 110g E-Tip for the 30-30, M1 Carbine & maybe a Savage or Krag.

A friend uses the 125 AB in his 308 with very good results. Started with the BT then changed to the AB just thought it might hold together a little more. No complaints. Dan.

Another good video. Will have to try some lighter bullets. Might work well in the TC 30-30 as well.
Curious if you have a method to measure actual recoil?

Great write up Guy, I have been using 44.5 grains of Varget for several years, behind the SMK, and have seen similar groups. My 308 is my plinking rifle, and I take it south in the winter for Coyotes. I use a similar load with soft point bullets.

Alderman, can't speak for Guy, maybe he has a way to measure it. But a formula I ran across somewhere years ago stuck with me. I guess because I like math. It's simple and holds up against other online calculations that are more complicated.

It's Recoil = (B+P x P) / (RW x 80)

Bullet + powder X powder. Divided by (rifle weight) x 80.

So in Guys light 308 load.

125 bullet weight + 50 grains of powder = 175

175 x 50 grains of powder = 8750

Take an assumed total rifle weight of 8 lbs and multiply it by 80. = 640

Divide 8750 by 640. = 13.67 ft lbs of recoil.

Using the same formula and figuring the same weight rifle, that's right on the money with a normal 7mm-08 load using a 140 gr bullet. Nobody ever accused the 7mm-08 of being heavy on recoil using a suitable weight rifle.

Comparatively it's less than Guy's 25-06 load with 115 BT's using the same weight rifle. That's if I remember his charge weight correctly. I think it was 60 grs.

You can use that formula to pre-figure the recoil with your 30-30 TC. It wouldn't be much because of the low powder charge, but I don't know your gun weight.

Not yet... I used the JBM ballistics calculator, free and available online. :)

Gavin and Travis at Ultimate Reloader are working on some sort of in-house recoil measuring device, but I haven't poked into that project yet so I'm not sure what's going on there or when it's going to surface.

Loading some 130 gr Barnes TTSX today. Hoping that they shoot great - if so I may well use them for mule deer later this month.

I have tried the 125 ballistic tips and 125 accubonds in a 308 and a 30-06. Groups out of both were outstanding!! I am saving some of the accubonds for when I finally get another 308. I regrettably sold the last one.
