I couldnt take it anymore fellas. I HAD to get out and call some coyotes. I picked up my dad at about 5 pm and we headed out of town to my regular calling areas. I have taken Dad out calling before but for some reason, I have never been able to call a coyote in while Dad was with me. We have shot coyotes together but not called coyotes. But, as we were drivin down the farm road, I could see something laying out in the pasture. At first I thought it was an antelope until it got up and took off. I stopped the truck, grabbed my rifle, and took aim. The coyote stopped at 256 yards and I squeezed the trigger. What I heard was the thump of my bullet pile driving my first coyote of the year into the ground! I didnt get a picture of this one but I was beyond impressed with the results of my new load!

Since we werent saving fur this trip, I was shooting my Ruger M77 270 Winchester with 110gr Vmax's loaded to about 3250fps. Dad was shooting his 30 year old Ruger M77 25-06 with 100gr Ballistic Tips.

For our first stand, we set up on the side hill of a big coulee. Right when I started calling, I noticed a coyote about 3/4 of a mile out. As I was calling, Dad let me know that there was two more with it. The left and right coyotes both were not interested and just sat down. The middle coyote came charging in hard and never stopped until he was about 190 yards out. The cows in the pasture were playing "lets give away the hunter's position" and the coyote alerted to them looking at us.
I told Dad to shoot and with a loud "THUMP" the coyote was down! He was still floppin some, so I sent him 110 grains of pain too. Dad was finally a believer in the fact that a coyote can be called! We were both ecstatic and I was extremely happy to have called this dog in for him. Here are a couple pics of it.

We hiked back to the truck and headed out to another spot I have had good luck in. This stand didnt show any coyotes but here are a couple pictures from where we were sittin.

We packed up and walked back to the truck and headed off to one more place. As we were drivin across the prarie, we spotted a coyote standing down in the coulee. Dad took aim, and shot right over the top of the coyote. We both estimated the distance wrong since it was a young coyote and we just assumed it was an adult that was a long ways off. Anyways, the coyote took off running and I knew where he would come out at. The coyote came running out about 60 yards from us. I took my safety off and swumg with the dog. I pulled the trigger and slapped him to the ground!

After this coyote, we headed back towards town and made one more quick stand a few miles down the road. We had one or two coyotes howling back at us but they never showed up. Here are a few pics from that stand.

All in all, it was a perfect afternoon with Dad. We had a blast and I was more than happy that I finally got to show him why calling coyotes is so fun! I can't wait for cold weather, snow, and pale coyotes!

Looks like a lot of fun, even better that you can do it with your dad. Good to see that you still have your Ruger 270 along with the Tikka, how is the Ruger shooting compared to your Tikka?

It does look like a lot of fun. Believe it or not I never got one

The only load I could ever get to shoot good out of this ruger was REALLY slow. So I pulled all the bullets out of that ammo and those are getting put to use in my Tikka. But I worked up this 110gr Vmax load to see how they shot out of my Ruger and I was surprised when it shot about a 3/4 inch 5 shot group with 3 in the same hole. So my Ruger has been assigned the role of coyote exploder and if I want to hunt deer with it, Ill just sight it in with 130gr Fusions that it shot between 1/2 and 3/4"! As much as I love the feel of the Hogue stock that is on it, I hate how flimsy it is, so one of these days Ill put it in a different stock that is more sturdy and go from there. But let me tell you, this rifle took its new role, and ran with it! I have never seen the same reaction from a coyote with any other caliber/cartridge. This 270/110gr Vmax combo absolutely hammers them!

Fotis, just sit where you can see, blow on a rabbit distress, especially after a big storm and look out! They will come runnin! Or come on up and Ill put ya on one!

That is a great account of time well spent. It sounds like a truly great time for both you and your dad. I can't imagine that he was anything other than pleased to spend time with you.

DT,

Good job on the coyotes. I love calling coyotes.....you the hunter become the hunted. 8)

Fotis,

I will bring my call and we will give it a try in a few weeks.

Now you have me jonesin to go call some dogs, and I'm in the middle of a move so there's no way! Darn you!

Great pics and glad you called some song dogs in!

Sounds like you had a great day! Nice shot on that runner too. Very different scenery than what I encounter here, sure makes sense to have a flat-shooting rig there.

I'm a big fan of the Ruger guns, they can be quite accurate and are pretty tough. Two of my buddies have 375 Ruger's with the Hogue stock and they both really like how comfortable they are but it doesn't hurt to put a different stock on. If we end up buying a 270 for my wife the 110 gr Vmax sounds like a good practice load.

DT, those are excellent photos. I am glad you had such a successful day with your Dad
That is a memory that neither one of you will forget for a long, long time.

Blessings,
Dan
