I couldnt take it anymore and the wind wasnt blowin much so after work, I loaded up all my junk and 3 rifles and headed out. Of course it didnt rain all day and as soon as I headed out of town it started raining. I got ahead of the rain by the time I got to my shootin spot. As soon as I pulled up, a coyote took off out of the coulee and I already had my 270 ready. Was a loooong running shot but I let one fly at about 350 yards. I didnt get him but I hit close! Anyways, I set up my target in the mud and drove back to 350 yards. Got set up with my Rem 700 22-250 and let a couple fly before I got the hold over right. Then shot this group

One hit high but the other 4 arent bad at all considering I was just guesstimating how far to hold over. I was shooting 50gr Btips out of it.

I backed up to 410 yards and got set up with my Rem 700 300WSM shooting 180gr accubonds. I twisted the CDS cap to 410 and let a few fly. Here is a video of the first 3. I was happy considering the last time I shot this rifle was in August or September.

Should have quit while I was ahead but I still had ammo left so I blasted away a few more times. The wind had picked up a little and it started to rain some so I only managed to make one more hit but the rest just barely missed to the left. My last hit also knocked the pin out of one of the shakles so my steel was only hangin by one chain and I didnt want to mess it up more. I put that rifle up after getting a little frustrated.
here is the group.

Found the pin on the ground luckily but its stripped a little. Anyone have any ideas how to fool proof this set up? We tried using rubber bungee straps but those shredded if the steel was hit close to the strap.

I waited a little bit and the rain let up so I broke out the 270 WIn. I had loaded up some 110gr Vmax's earlier this winter for coyotes but only shot them at paper. It took me a while to figure out the hold over with my Burris Ballistic Plex reticle but got it kind of figured out.

All in all, my day at work was pretty rough but shooting managed to make it all better!
Here is a couple other pics from this afternoon
My target set up my Dad built. The top rail had studs welded on so it breaks down in to 5 pieces

My "range." As you can see, I can shoot as far as I can see if I wanted to! Im lucky enough to be able to shoot/hunt out here. Its owned by a friend at church. They dont hunt or anything so I basically have exclusive access to the 5000+ acres or mule deer, antelope, coyotes, and gophers. My two railroad plate targets are on the side of the hill and my swinging target is to the left of the hill at the base.

Nice shooting and some fine guns there you may need to visit the Remington thread :) Thats a really nice 270 the Hogue stocks are very comfortable to shoot. Back when I had a 300 WSM my load was very similar to yours except I used the 180 Partition protected point and 69.5 gr H 4831 SC it's a really good powder in that cartridge. Thats a nice place to go shooting you got there.

Looks like a heck of a good time, and a pretty nice area to hunt and shoot!

Question for you: how's the feeding on your WSM?

Ive never really had a problem with it before especially rackin them in while shooting at something that has the potential to run away! But this afternoon it was giving me a little bit of a hiccup. I think Im going to have to seat my bullets in just a little bit. I noticed they were awfully close to the front of the mag box

It's good to hear the "twang" as the bullet strikes the steel. Good shooting.

Nice shooting w/ some fine looking rifle DT.

The only advice I can bring to the table regarding your steel target & to protect the pins would be to weld an " U " shape closed box around both holes. You'd want the box to be deep and wide enought so that you're able to slide in the pin and secure it in.

Is the guage is thick enough, the steel should be able to take it. Ideally, angled shape would be even better as it deflects impact much better than flat surfaces.

Cheers

DT,
Nice guns and nice shooting! Got to bust some prairie dogs this weekend with the wife and kids. She likes the .243 and life is good. Try using tires for your swingers. That's what they use at our range and they seem to hold up pretty well. Just watch out for those steel belts. They're damned sharp.

Thanks! Im always debating with myself on whether or not to sell it and try something else. Im really wantin a Featherweight 270Win, 84L Montana 270 Win, or a 338 Mag of some sort.

DT

Nice great pictures. You have a great set up for long range practice. Thanks for sharing.

Nice range.... Looks like Belle Fourche. Wet day on the range is better than most days at work. CL
