What load for the 325WSM?

Man, Scotty, I wish you and Brian had been along. My second hunting partner also tagged out yesterday, after seeing no less than 70 animals and seven spikes, missing at least two shots on game. Three for three is pretty good success on elk, no matter how you cut it. and I'm pretty sure we could have gotten both of you guys shots as well.

Well, I'm envious, Kurt. I saw two elk in a full day of hunting. I saw numerous moose, lots of whitetail and mule deer, a wolf and a number of coyotes--and I never pulled the trigger!

It certainly makes the hunt worthwhile when you see that many legal elk in one herd. I would be very happy to have had the priveledge of picking my shot on a spike elk. That does not happen very often.

I wouldn't be too envious, Doc. You have a staggering variety of opportunities up there in BC for this Oregon guy who usually only draws one tag out of six.

I'm a little ashamed to admit it but I used the Winchester 220gr. Power Point factory load. I still don't have dies for the .325 yet.

I took along my Howa 7 WSM and my R700 .257 Weatherby as well, intending to swap them out during the day, just so I could get some field time with each. Interesting that the gun I used to kill him was the only one without a McSwirley (that I had with me).

Kurt, I wouldn't be a BIT ashamed. From all I have seen, that 220 Power Point clips along just right for the 325WSM, and it's carrying alot of hammer! I dig your 325. I am very happy you were able to get it out. I am sure that old Doctor is smiling a little too!

I loved hunting Oregon Kurt, you all have great elk herds, but they are that way for a reason, they are managed pretty well, letting the bulls get big and culling the spikers.. Some may not like it, but I loved seeing alot of elk out there, and being able to get on them daily. Really is a fun way to hunt elk. Who knows, we might end up around each others camp one of these years. I wished I was hunting with Bill for the 2nd season spike hunt. Pretty sure the old goat will do well and I would love to be there with him. To me, ANY elk is a GREAT elk. I love the hunt and like to eat them, and good mates to have around the fire at the end of the day makes it just about the best fun a guy like me can have.

I am hoping that the new system in Washington will be more focused on breeding game and enabling hunters and less on politicians misuing or money!

Good luck with that, Charlie. Particularly with elected leaders in California Far North.

I know the area where I was hunting has a fairly substantial poaching problem with the natives...

The Yakima tribe has stated for the record that they do not recognise "white man's law" as it pertains to elk being poached by them anywhere in the state, anytime that they feel like. I am 1/16th Cherokee which is enough to be an "indian" on many reservations. Does this misfortune of birth give me the right to poach? I do not think so! Besides which, I have blue eyes and had blond hair.

I say misfortune because all this Cherokee legacy brought my family was 4 generations of alcholism but that is another story. I am not going to join the tribe and they are not going to agree with me, so that is that! This country is full of minorities who feel that we (the majority) owe them a living because of stuff that happened ten generations ago. When do we agree to stop hanging onto a long dead legacy as an excuse for not participating in American society? Just a thought from an old man?

Sorry, poor choice of words on my part. I should have said 'locals'. I might call them subsistence hunters if they weren't driving $40k trucks.

Nah, just poachers.
