370
As many of you know I purchased a 340 Weatherby from Charlie about a month or so ago. It's a beautiful nickel plated Weatherby Alaskan with an Accubrake that he placed into a wood stock rather than the original plastic stock.

It arrived very quickly and I had time to mount a Zeiss 4.5-14x50 from another rifle I own and have a chance to sight it in with factory 250gr Nosler Partition ammo. I had it shooting well to 250+ yards and decided that this one with a brake was much nicer to shoot than my other 340 with its MagNaPorting so decided it would be going on the elk hunt with me.

On the evening of the first day I had the opportunity to take a nice 5x5 bull and did so with this rifle. Range was 400+ yards and the bullets and rifle both performed well. Of note, if you have the Shooter program on your phone it is possible to remove the caps from the adjusters on a rifle scope and count clicks for proper 400 yard adjustment if you wish. Needless to say I'll be getting turrets on my scope for the future.

Here is a photo of me with the elk.
Oh, and it was my birthday, too. Not a bad present if I say so myself.

Congratulations on a fine rifle and on taking an excellent example of Cervus canadensis nelsoni.

What a great birthday present. Congratulations on a great trophy :)
PS. Happy belated Birthday.

Blessings,
Dan

A Happy Birthday Bull. That's cool. And with your new hammer of a rifle too - excellent.

Congratulations. Looks like the good ol' 250 gr Nosler Partition did very well. As expected.

Isn't it nice to find that a bullet designed so long ago still works as intended.

Good shootin', well done.

My elk hunting days are, at least for the present, over. I am pleased that someone has my Weatherby .340 rifle who will use it for its intended purpose, to kill elk with. That is a great birthday present, Patrick and I could not wish you a better one.

I spent my birthday just having come out of a coma in the ICU during the previous day to my birthday at the local hospital. I would wish for your birthday in place of mine but both ended well, congratulations on your really nice elk.

Very nice looking bull., it would be great to have a birthday present like that every year.

Bill

I had a pretty good present in 2009 when I shot a wolf on my birthday.

Congrats on a nice birthday bull.

Great bull and congrats on a great rifle. That rifle was made to elk hunt! Happy Birthday!

Awesome bull and excellent shot you made also! Bet you won't forget this birthday after several more!

Thanks everyone. It was generally a good day - my hunting partner got a nice 6x7 mid morning and I got my bull just before dark. I just wish that Dad had taken a bull as well as this trip was a bust for him.

Patrick

Patrick, I am convinced that elk hunting is for guys younger than 55 years old unless they have a very supportive family. I shot my last elk when I was 58 years old and that was about the limit for me physically being without family hunting, with me. Bill is still doing it but he is a elk machine (in a good way)! I do not own a 4-wheeler ATV or snow-mobile, just a 4WD truck. I always did stalk and glass hunting, usually with a camp of friends.

Charlie,

Watching the 67 and 69 year old gentlemen (the 4th hunter and my Dad) I fully understand. Dad isn't nearly as good at it as he was in 2007 or 2009, and when he twisted his ankle halfway through the hunt it essentially ended much of his chances. I'm hoping that he recovers enough for his TX deer hunt in a couple of weeks.

I told Mom when we got home that if he intends to do this ever again that a few things have to change...

Patrick

Nice way to celebrate a BD! It is great that OT3's old rifle is getting used in a productive way as he had hoped. What a hammer!

I understand perfectly. I glass hillsides mostly now. I still can shoot better and further than my two hunting sons (I work hard at it) but I do not have the physical component anymore. I am 69 now and am disabled.
