First time elk hunt 3-5 year time line?

Oregon spike hunt or Wyoming cow/calf is a bargain. Great hunting, plenty of ground and good numbers of elk. Wyoming is a real good place to accrue points and still be able to put an elk in the cooler.

Im getting both my Oregon and Wyoming tags this year. I'm going to try and do both if I can. I retire in June and hopefully start my next job in July so in reality, I have no idea where I will be Coke Oct/Nov.. I have really come to enjoy the Oregon hunt.

My advice is go this year, get 3 other buddies together and DIY hunt. It is not that expensive if you ride together sharing expenses.
My advice is also go Mule Deer Hunting because of higher sucess rate and when out west scout for elk after to make plans for later. Just FYI most western states 50% of the land is public lots of ground to explore.
