For you Whelenites

Very handsome. Definitely for the collector. I'd be shooting it and destroy the value of the rifle as a collectible.

That is a nice one but I have to question the barrel since there is a receipt for a Douglas barrel and then the Winchester markings on it. Why would Winchester put their name on someone elses barrel and claim it is Winchester proof steel?

That is one sweet 35 Whelen & being a model 70 must have really caught the eyes of our good Doctor !!

Blessings,
Dan

I just thought it an unusual caliber for that configuration. Must of been for something very specific.

I'm with you and that action is for stripper clip also and that's missing on invoice.

That certainly is a unique firearm, does anyone make 35 calibre match bullets?

Bet it's an old leftover H&H target action. Seems odd to build a Whelen like that for target work but I've seen crazier

Winchester did some odd stuff in its time.

The round is certainly capable of fantastic accuracy as DrMike's recent thread proves. But yes it is a bit odd

When Win started making the 300 H&H again I purchased a Super Grade and all it had was fancy stock/Super Grade on the floor plate and they were made for Hicks to see if there was any interest in a production run. Standard model has same barrel/action but plain stock and I was FFL dealer back then. Win custom shop build those rifles and they never had stripper clip.

I purchased some of those Win Sharpshooters models with Schneider barrel/H&S stock all those barrels where stamp like other models even to caliber.

Win custom shop would do stripper clip on some models but you paid for it. to me looks like Winchester stamped barrel and whoever chamber stamped 35 Whelen vs what they did with those Schneider barrel rifles.

Problem is Win did not chamber/furnish/ or pay for that barrel maybe reason it's list on gunbroker and they where pretty honest about the rifle and you have receipt on who chambered it and who send barrel to them and Win proofing barrel.

I just dug out the magazine. The Murray's were personal friends of numerous Winchester exec's who helped them aquire numerous rare winchesters and had many rare configurations made for them as well.

The Murray collection of Winchesters is one of the greatest out there boys. Peter was an airline pilot so he used to go all over the country in search of everything winchester. He would go to a gun show, find a Winny he really liked, then send his wife and young son over to the table and play the " my son really wants to get his dad a rifle but we just cant afford that much". Then the son would cry and the price would always go down.

I have an article written about the murrays laying around from 2000 and they have some ULTRA rare m70's. I believe they have/had the only 70 chambered in 45/70, 416 Taylor, etc.

It wouldnt surprise me if winchester made him that.
