Fun on the Range today!

Longwinters and I headed for the range today...

I started working up .280 cal 160gr NAB loads for next seasons Elk hunt and wanted to hone in a deer load for my 7mm08. The rifles are both stock Remington 700 CDLs with std 24" bbls.

The .280 trigger was set down to 3#(by yours truly) and it carries a 4-12 Cabelas Premium Alaskan Guide scope...all my other scopes are Zeiss Conquests but I am very pleased with this sope for under $400.

this is 53.5 gr of IMR 4831

this is 57gr of Re 22 the 1st hole was my fouling shot...I pull a boresnake thru every 5 shots when load testing...

This was a pleasant surprise...I had a older box of Hornady 139gr Interlocks...ahead of 48.5gr of H 4350
The 140 NABs were not working for me with this load so I tried 5 of the old Hornadys...not too shabby
This Rem 7MM08 CDL is three yrs old with a self-adjust 2.5# trigger job and a 3X9X40 Zeiss Conquest

The Hornady INTL success has me thinking about trying some 140gr NPTs.

A big thanks to POP and JD 338 for ideas on the .280 loads!

Looks like some good loads. You might want to try 54.0 grs IMR4831 to see if it will tighten up. RL22 is there and you are ready to go get an elk.

Nice shooting! Makes for a great day on the range with on-paper results like those... That 700 CDL is a good looking rifle too. I got all excited and ordered one shortly after Remington introduced them. Have hunted with it for three seasons now, and still think it's one of the best looking hunting rifles I've ever seen.

Regards, Guy

It can be tough shooting next to a guy that every couple of shots is snickering and has that smirk on his face that only a guy shooting good groups can get

I should have never traded him back his 7m-08 CDL :)

Northwoods is a great guy, and deserves good groups with all the time he is spending reloading lately on his new RCBS Turret press.

Long

Did you get any speeds?

BTW, quickload predicts 2891 fps with the RL22 load. And 2844 with the
imR load.

Long,

Pay back time at deer camp, beat him at Smear.

If you're referring to the little subtraction problems listed on each target, Northwoods is in remedial math, and the guys at the range won't let him shoot until he gets a math problem correct.

Seriously, that little calculation is to derive group size (center-to-center) versus what we can accurately measure, which is outside edge to outside edge. Just measure with a caliper, and then subtract one 'caliber' from your measurement. You do this to get the distance from the center of the two shots that are farthest apart, as that is the true 'group size.' If you just measure the outside edges, you would get numbers that are not comparable from one caliber to the next, as a 375H&H could only give you .375" groups at best, where a 22-250 could provide you with .223" groups, when both guns sent all the shots through the same hole. Hope that answers your question. If not, let us know, and we'll give it another shot, so to speak, pardon the pun.

Yea, thanks. I enjoy learning from you guys!!!
I swear that I learn something new and interesting every week from you guys.

I did JD...the 54.0 gr IMR 4831 load opened up to well over an inch? :(

57.5 gr of Re 22 puts me over 60,000 PSI according to POPs CD quick load chart. Thats what I was planning using for a Max guideline...although there were no dramatic pressure signs.

Northwoods Hunter

I'd go with the RL22 load.
That 160 gr AB will also work very well on deer too. You could have a single load for WT Deer in the UP and Elk out west.

Good shooting!

Thats what Long and I discussed at the range...a 160 AB going close to 2900 fps would be a very potent all round hunting tool!

Perfect!

I'm using the same 160 gr AB bullet with RL22 in my 280AI.
I bullet for everything.

We didn't bring Long's Chrono POP... Actually I had a two shot one holer with 57.5gr of RE 22 but I didn't get the third shot to join them...the group was still about 1/2"... I will try the 57.5gr again and maybe a 57.7gr load of RE 22...

However...I could actually feel an increased "thump" against the shoulder with the 57.5gr load. I wonder if I am starting to quickly climb up the pressure curve at that point? :?
