I learned that furloughed government workers will be paid once the government starts writing checks again.

So once again a certain segment of employees gets a paid vacation without using leave. Meanwhile other government employees are forced to go in to work and all they will receive, once the government starts cutting their checks, is their pay. This is not fair and equitable and it's wrong.

What would you suggest - pay the working employees more than they earn?
BTW - no one is "forced to go in to work".

Furloughed workers should not be paid and those working should be paid.

I don't believe anyone not working should receive compensation they didn't earn nor should those working be paid more than they earn. Those that are on furlough will receive a check for money they didn't earn.

vince; My take on the furlough is perhaps a bit different than yours. civil service workers have no say or choice in the matter. Government workers are controlled by goverment regulation. What is fair or not fair plays no part regarding who is furloughed and who is not. Who ever is the PRESIDENT decides who gets furloughed. If you get furloughed you cannot take annual leave or sick leave. You do not get payed. You still got to pay the bills. This time around congress decided to pay people in spite of the furlough. They did not have to pay people. Civil service unions have no say or authority in this type of matter. Therefore I think it is fair to pay our dedicated civil service work force. Especially since our basically irrresponsible Politicans have have turned our country into a total mess. Vince I will be upfront on this matter. I am biased on the subject since I did 39 years working on the finest navy nuclear powered vessels the world has ever known. I do not think it fair to not pay the finest engineers, electritions, machinest, pipefitters in the world today just because Wash DC was fighting over the budget and few other things. By the way a close friend and shooting buddy of mine was on sick leave recovering from knee replacement. His boss called him and told him his is now furloughed . My buddy had to hit his savings account to pay the bills. He will eventually get payed. I think it is fair. regards:

Vince; When I worked for the National Weather Service I had tht experience of two almst shut down government furloughs but was "forced" to continue working because my job was "important" considering the safety of the public. Like Hubcap, I don't think it is fair that government workeds are told to stay home and not get a paychek because a bunch of CHILDISH AHOLES can't do their bloody job, bickering over a bunch of nonsense and controlled by a narcissitc POS we have to call Mr. President. You want to see one of the first things those ectal orifices did with their new found money? here is an E-mail I got form a friend of mine this very morning. I will be sending copies to the appropriate children with some minor mods so that my friend does not get into trouble. Me? I don't give a damn I'm no longer overwhelmed by those jackasses.

""US quietly releasing $1.6B in Pakistan assistance. Must Read?Yes

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. has quietly decided to release more than $1.6 billion in military and economic aid to Pakistan that was suspended when relations between the two countries disintegrated over the covert raid that killed Osama bin Laden and deadly U.S. airstrikes against Pakistani soldiers."

"I'm so glad our republican senators and congressmen completely caved in to the democrats.
We didn't have money to send our dead soldiers home, or to pay their families the Death Benefits.

We might never have been able to fund our friends in Al Quieda of Pakistan so lavishly if those sniveling cowards in Congress had fought to the very end to stop all these vital give aways to our enemies. Now they can buy more modern weapons to kill our soldiers with."

As a civil servant I am reminded first that I am an American and I believe that fair or not the shutdown is a good thing and that our current path is unsustainable.
Truth be told I'd like to see about 70% - 90% of the federal government abolished.

Please start with the IRS. How about putting The white house and congress on furlough. That would be a hoot. With 320 million people in this country and only Approx. 40 million bother to vote,I really don,t know what it will take to change the way things are going. Obama stated only hours after the gov. opened up that if the repubs want change they need to win an election. I guess he is the President of the 20 million that voted for him and the other 300 million don,t matter. Things are darn sure a mess.

I think we are on the same page, so to speak, Hubcap.

Where we want the nation to be in the future isn't the issue. I believe it's in how we will get there, if we can, that is cause for all the discourse. I'm sure that the current president doesn't consider myself as someone that matters as he matters not a whit to me. I don't consider him my president and I'm quite certain he doesn't consider my views on any issue.

Our representatives don't represent us anymore. That's what I have issue with.

"Our representatives don't represent us anymore. That's what I have issue with."

You and me both. Problem is, how do we get rid of them? Apparently voting is not voting or is it a case of, "He's the incumbent. I'm too lazy to figure out if someone else might be better?"
Methinks it's our own damn fault, present company excluded of course.
