well ive bagged my first elk ever in my 40 year old life  after fighting 2foot of snow (and still snowing ) for 3 days and not seeing anything we were giving up and heading down from the cabin to go home,,
we got down the mountain about 400yrds and there stood a nice cow,, got out and was ready to take her and she ran,, drove a little farther and there she was again but this time she did'nt get away !!!! droped her at about 200yds with my springfield 30/06 with 180gr corelock,,, after the shot about 12 big cows were running everwhere,, mine was'nt the biggest but im very proud of her anyway

Ain't that the way it works? You work hard and see nothing, and just as you are throwing in the towel, there is your chance. Congratulations! Were you able to get a picture?

Congratulations on your first elk. Any elk is a good elk, and all elk are good eating!! As Dr. Mike said, you relax and let your guard down, and there they are! After hiking and fighting deep snow, suddenly there is one right out of the truck. We call that Cashing In A Coupon!! A person just can't beat that 30-06 can they!

Congrats on the first! Now you'll have to work on finding a bull!
here in N.M. we have the draw and it seems more out of staters are drawing than the people that reside here,, the state makes more money,,
getting a bull tag is like winning the lotto here, dont get me wrong im very happy with a cow but i did put in for a bull,, fish and game has gotten so money hungry that there thinking of putting turkey to the draw also :x

6mm Remington you are right on with the 30/06 i think it should be mandatory for every hunter to own one  mine has always been my go to rifle,, i wanted to use my new model 70 270wsm but the 30/06 was up front with me at the time

Congrats on your first Elk, remember any Elk is a trophy and great table fair.

Blessings,
Dan

I understand the waiting! Oregon is hard to draw a good unit as well, I've been waiting seven years for my big bull tag and I still have about four years to go . Getting tired of hunting spikes and not seeing any. I'm thinking about putting in for a cow tag as well for my second choice. Elk meat is pretty darn good stuff no matter what sex it came from.

+1 on the Elk meat. Cow Elk is some of the best wild game meat you can eat.
We eat elk and deer through about May/June and then have to start buying beef again. Elk is by far our favorite. With my son now hunting, if we could just get two late cow tags we could have enough for the year.
Yea .... we are meat eaters at our house.

I can still remeber my first elk, I ran up to it and grabbed a hind leg to pull it around to gut it. Guess what, I couldn't move it! They are a big animal and great eating. Congrats on your first!
