Just traded in my ruger m77 22-250( just never could get it to shoot no matter what I did) for a brand new Remington 700 SPS in 22-250 ( I had 500 rounds loaded so I wanted the same caliber.) It has a 26" heavy barrel and 1in14 twist. I plan on a skim bed and free float of the barrel for now and maybe a new trigger ( not to impressed with the x mark trigger.) I plan on topping it off with a vortex viper 6.5-20x44 glass.

Congratulations. We'll all be waiting to hear how it shoots for you. A lot of others have had good success with this rifle, and the cartridge is classic.

I'll be sure to give a full range report. My ruger just wouldn't shoot tight groups and I did everything. Hopefully with the proven 700 I'll get what I'm looking for. Gonna start barrel break in tomorrow.

Congratulations on the new rifle. My 700 VLS is a solid .5 MOA shooter and I am sure yours will be too.
I have had great luck with Varget, RL 15 and H380 powders using 50 gr and 55 gr BT bullets.

Thanks! I got about 500 rounds loaded up from my other gun. The only thing I gotta do it decrease the oal cause the bullet is getting shoved up into the rifling. I bought hornady's lock-n-load oal gauge and bullet comparator as well so I should be able to figure something out.

I wanna go with talley scope mounts as I believe the are a better design than leupold. Anybody know if I can use low mounts with this barrel and the scope or do I have to go to med?

That is one fine looking piece of weaponry there! The Vortex shoud be a great scope for that thing. Keep us posted on how she shoots.

Nice pickup. I plan on buying a couple of that model rifle, probably a .22-250 and a .204. I'm kind of committed now, because I have one McMillan stock on the way for it (an A3), and I'm thinking very hard about ordering another (A5).

That is a nice choice on a gun and on a scope! I have the the same scope on my 7mm rem Ultra mag Sendero.

Do yourself a favor and skim bed it. The SPS stocks are a little flimsy. The only Achilles heel of that gun.

Yep I plan on doing that. I usually like to pillar bed too. I have never done it to a syn stock, but I imagine it's the same.

Here is my M700 VLS 22-250 with a Nikon Monarch UCC 5.5-15.5 scope

Thanks SE, it is a shooter.
I think I am going to sell it. I want something lighter and faster twist for heavier bullets.

I'm starting barrel break in tomorrow and prep for a pillar job with skim bed! Will post pics

I used Nosler's procedure for barrel break in today. First of all I couldn't believe how dirty the barrel was out of the box! I used a pile of patches to clean the barrel out even before I shot it! I hope breaking in a barrel like that is worth it because it is pretty time consuming. I can say for a fact, that as it went, it took less and less patches to clean the barrel. So, there must be something to this. I guess I'll know when I mount the scope and shoot it.

And we do need a range report please!

You will get one I promise! The scope should be here any day. I got some sierra 52gr HPBT and some hornady 55gr v-max bullets to try out. Gonna try H414, H380, Varget and some IMR powders out till I get the best load.

And if you can't find a decent load with those powders, give RL 15 a try.

Yep - the 22-250 is one fine round.
Your trigger will adjust up quite nicely - not sure how pillars will work with that stock ? I've played with a .223 700 VTR and am just going to throw in the towel and re-stock it.

My 22-250 has shot decent with about anything, but have settled on Viht N-140, CCI BR Primers and either Sierra 55gr B-kings or Nosler B-tips. Beautiful thing is I can interchange the two without affecting POI.

I'm with JD though - not selling mine, as it was given to me for my 9th B-day. That was 30yrs ago, but a faster twist barrel would be nice for the 60 to 70gr Bullets.
Can't wait to see the results -

Yeah I took the barral and action off. Couldn't believe the stock is hollow inside. Really no way to pillar bed it. I'm set on ordering a thumbhole stock from rifle-stocks.com for it. Then pillar bed and bed the recoil lug. Here is the stock, I'm going with a different color though

After changing my mind a hundred times I ordered my stock. This isn't my gun but the same stock. I also got rid of that junk xmark trigger and put on a new timney set at 1 pound. Also plan on installing a tubb speedlock firing pin and spring and a badger ord bolt handle.
