Well, I got out yesterday and tried loads with the old rifle. I loaded up some 150 grain Hornady SST's and some AA2520. I really just looked over QL, picked a powder I wasn't using in anything else and loaded three different charges. Just wanted to get the peep sight zeroed some and see if the old rifle still shot well.

I started out at 25 yards with them and got it pretty close.

Then, I took it out to 200 yards and started shooting. I need to figure out a better bullseye for shooting iron's than the orange pastys, but it worked decent enough.

The first group was the lower right, then I made a dope change, upped the load 1 grain and shot the upper triangle.

After that I shot the next two charges of 42 grains of AA2520.

I was pretty happy overall with the rifle. Pretty sure the old rifle will make it to the woods this Fall. Feeds and shoots real nice.

I then took three shots with the remaining rounds at 50 yards, from the kneeling

Pretty happy with it. Might just leave it as it and shoot it the way he did. He didn't have much trouble taking moose, elk, bears and a slew of deer with the old rifle.

That is just cool, Scotty. The old rifle looks to be worthy of dropping a deer or two still.

Good shooting Scotty. It would be very cool to take a deer with that rifle.

Showing promise scotty with the iron sights, Scotty. Is that a peep sight on the back part of the action?

It is Charlie, looks a fairly decent Williams peep. The gold bead up front is pretty nice as well. Seems like a great combo.

Thank you guys. I am looking forward to loading some more up for it and practicing with it this year. Be cool to put a deer or two down with it.

Scotty

Well done! The M99 300 Savage is a popular set up in the UP and for good reason.

Looking good Scotty. Can't wait to get mine finished so I can shoot it. The one I have is chambered in 308.

Nice, it will be great to get the old gun back into the bush where it belongs. Lots of great family history with that one and more to come.

.

Pick up some SR target centers or any of the reduced NRA or CMP target centers designed for shooting at 200 yards. Any of these will make a fine aiming black for iron sights. For shooting at 100 yards, the SR1 100 yard reduced centers will be appropriate.

I've had excellen luck in my Savage with IMR 4064, IMR 4320 and W 748 with 150 gr bullets.

Thank you. I will grab some of those. I was thinking a large black bull would be great.

I agree, it looks like a bunch of powders should work real well in the old rifle. I happened to have two pounds of AA2520, and at around 40 grains a charge, it should last awhile.

Very nice, Scotty! maybe this will motivate me enough to start working on a load for mine. What peep sight is on yours?

I think it's an old Williams. Seems like a decent enough sight. I'm actually looking forward to getting back into the reloading room and loading a bunch more up. Figure those 150 SSTs will make good practice bullets and would work excellent on deer as well. If I do happen to run across some 150 or 165 BTs I will give them a shot at well.
