Grizzly Pics from Tonight

I went on a drive this evening and found another griz. When I first saw him, he stood on his back legs but my flash was on so of course the pic didnt work. He went back in the bushes and I waited about 5 mins and he came back out of the brush and then walked across the road right in front of me about 100 yards away.

I really need to get a better camera and I wish the bears would come out a little earlier so the pics didnt turn out blurry.

Right where he crossed the road

Also saw this bull and two others that were way smaller. Saw about 5 or 6 cows this evening too

Also on saturday, my dad, buddy, and I went up to Pishkun Res to do some pike fishin. We fished from 8:30-3:30 and only caught a few little 4 inch perch. Had pike follow our lures alot but wouldnt bite. But one of these eagles flew up to the nest with a fish which made us even more mad lol. If a bird could do it, we should have been able to with all our fancy lures and boat!

Great pics, DT. I always enjoy seeing the eagles. They are pretty common up here.

I need to come over the pass and go Grizzly spotting with you. To see one out in the wild is just so incredibly neat. They just exude majesty and power. That is so neat seeing them back out on the prairie like they were 120 years ago.

It is fun watching them but when I can basically say "I want to go look at grizzlies tonight", and go out and usually find one without any trouble at all, to me it means there is getting to be too many. There were multiple bear sighting reports in the sheriffs report in the paper today. I understand that the bears are following the Teton River down from the Mtns but the bears are not just sticking to the river. They are all over the place. Out in CRP, stubble, on porches, around the elementary school, through town, etc etc. Fish and Game needs to do a recount and open a season. The bear from last night looked up at me and knew I was there even after seeing and hearing my truck but yet he could have cared less. Thats what I dont like and thats what is going to get someone killed.

I agree, their numbers would completely support a limited draw hunt for them. It needed to happen years ago DT, but thanks to Judge Malloy, he put them back on the endangered species list right after he removed the wolves so we could have our first wolf hunt if you remember. I have no doubt it was nothing but a political move on his part to save face to some extent with the animal rights folks. It isn't about science based wildlife management, it's all about politics.

I would love to be able to put in for a tag and to say I got to go at least in my lifetime even if I never got one! All of the Montana guys you know need to start writing e-mails to the state FWP and our legislators to see if we can jump start something. We need to let our thoughts be heard by folks who can and should make some changes, it does not good to preach to our choir here. Get anyone and everyone you know to start letting these people what is going on. You are correct too in that someone will probably get hurt before it screams out that there is an issue here. Does not look to me like a guy would want to take a fly pole down to the creek and catch some fish unless he had both bear spray and a firearm of some type.

You ask all the old outfitters in the Bob Marshall and they will tell you the bears hunted in the Bob gave them no troubles for the most part because they were hunted and had that fear of man solidly in their heads.

I completely agree!

Right down along this river, there have been multiple incidents with bow hunters getting charged by bears. There is no way I would ever bow hunt down there during early season for elk. Only time Id hunt along the Teton is late oct and nov. My dad was talking to a guy at the coffee shop a few days ago and he lives up the Teton Canyon road where Im seeing all of these bears. He went checkin cows a week or so ago and there was 6 grizzlies in and around the cows but not bothering them as far as he could tell...yeah 6 of them at once. Not to far from there, 9 grizzlies have been counted eating out of the same dead pit at the same time....

We have a good population of grizzlies here but you don't see them nearly as often as you are, having a hunting season for them is good for everyone, even the bears. When they get hunted they aren't nearly as bold and there are less encounters with trouble bears, they need to know we are the top of the food chain not them :)

Just saw on facebook from a guy that lives abut 15 miles north of Choteau that a grizzly sow with a cub have killed 44 ewes/lambs in 2 days up there......Fish and Game is going to try to trap them but will only relocate them since she has a cub. Which means they will just do it again somewhere else in the future. There is supposedly 5 more grizzlies out around that area also

Fascinating, and decidedly worrisome, article. Thanks for posting the link, DT.

I have seen three grizzly's in my lifetime. They are a wonderful beast to see. What you see is power, raw energy and disdain for all other animals. They are at the top of the food chain and are well aware of it!
