i am looking to get my wife a rifle for x mas. was looking at weatherby vanguard or or tikka lite. weight is a concern for her. both are close in price and i cant afford a nosler custom for her. anybody have any expeirnce with this. she says the remington model 7's are too heavy also, chambering will be 30-06.

Both are fine rifles. They each shoot well and are of reasonable weight.

Have you considered a Remington Model Seven in .308 or 7mm-08, or a Model 700 Mountain LSS in 30-06? Also, the Winchester Model 70 Featherweight in either .308 or 30-06 is close in weight to the Vangaurd.

Just my $.02 but if weight is a concern, won't a 30-06 have some pretty good recoil? If you hand load and are planning on loading it down for her, a .308 or a 7-08 will do the same thing.

My wife shoots a Rem 700 MTN in a 7-08. I put a youth stock on it for her, and the rifle doesn't weight more than seven and a half pounds with scope sling and bullets.

Both are indeed fine rifles. When it came to my 12 year old son last year he decided on a Savage 111F in 270 Win. Accurate,] as heck and he has blooded it with 4 animals already.

If it were me I would be looking into the 7mm08

Also make sure she understands that lighter means more recoil.

what about an sps youth? light and handy

good luck those women can be tough to please.

You should also consider the Ruger M77 Hawkeye Ultralite. It`s under 7 lbs, has a 20" barrel, with a shorter, handier, more manuverable and an easier OAL for your wife to handle and carry.

I have 2 Ruger rifles; one with a 20" barrel and the other with a 16.5" barrel. Both are great in the field and in any terrain condition.

It is available in the 30-06 and the 270. If she can handle the recoil from the `06, then fine.

Back to your original question. I would suggest the Tikka. I have 2 and they are great and light. The 30-06 would work and if recoil is a problem then get the reduced recoil type factory loads or if you hand load just down load with a bullet 150grs or preferably lighter.

IF you are not set on 30-06 then a 308 will do what a 30-06 will do with 150gr bullets or lighter and that is all that is needed for most all hunting. I would consider the 7mm-08 also. It works very well and has less recoil. I also have a Tikka in 6.5X55 which would be a good choice as would a Rem260 with is about the same.

I have a friend who I load for who has a Tikka lite, and I'm very impressed with the rifle. I think that would work for you . You might also consider the .280 Remington in a Remington Model 700 Mountain rifle. I'm really fond of the Laminated Stainless model. I had a MTN rifle in that caliber and it's a great rifle and a great round. I really feel that the Ruger Hawkeyes are really a nice rifle too. You might look at one of those.

I'm a big fan of the Weatherby Vanguard, but one thing I'd never say about the basic models most widely available is that they're light. The Vanguard action is a tad on the heavy side compared to some, though not so much as to be clunky or anything.

If you're looking for lighter rifles, the above suggestions to consider the 308 or 7mm-08 are wise. Both of these would be available in the Vanguard Compact, which would also include a youth stock and an adult stock, so your wife could choose the best fit for her. These guns are 20" barrels, but that's plenty for either of the above cartridges for most deer hunting, and it lessens the weight a bit, without the extra 4" of barrel.

I also agree she needs to consider weight as a major component of recoil.

she doesnt mind the recoil at all shoots my 300 winnie just fine, but i will not cut 2" off my stock.

str8meat,

I have to tell you that the topic title took me aback when I first read it. It sounds as if you are trying to trade your wife for a rifle, or perhaps trade a rifle for a wife. Any wife that not only tolerates our shooting, but is willing to join us in the sport, is a keeper.

The best advice I can give is to take here to a store with lots of rifles....Let her handle all of the above and see what she likes. You have to be a little careful though....I had a real hard time getting that pre-64 Winchester back out of my wife's hands. $$ $$ We went through all those mentioned above, she decided on the Tikka.

One other think to keep in mind. Sometimes small shooters will confuse a bad fit with being too heavy. I'd measure her for length of pull, and pay a little extra attention to it while helping her choose a rifle.

Your thread title totally fooled me. I thought you were proposing a swap of some kind.
:!:

My wife shoots a Tikka T3 LS 270WSM with 140gr Accubonds and a Leupld VX3 3.5-10x40 scope with the BC reticle. She took over this rifle before we were married so, I bought another one for me.

Great caliber / bullet combo on big game. To say the least...I'm very impressed with it !

A_Sniper was spot on.... Take her and let her handle all of them. Some may look light and be a suprise.

With that said, the T3 Tikka is certianly on of the lightest ones out there. My wife shoots a Model 7 Youth in .260. Very pleasant to shoot..... as it fills the gap between the .243 & 7-08

Let us know what you decide.
