Hi Everyone

I am applying next year(2014) for a Colorado cow elk tag and if I get lucky and get drawn. I'm wondering what guns to take. I know 100% that my savage 111 300wm with 180 partion's is going but wondering what I should take for a back up gun if needed.

savage 110 260rem with 140gr sierra game kings
Remington 700 270win with 140 Nosler accu bonds
rem 7600 308 with 165 NAB
marlin 336 in 35rem with 200 leverevloution

thanks in advance

matt

Take either the 270 Win or the .308 Win. You are using a good bullet that will perform well and there is enough mass and reach to tag out on your elk.

+1
Although, I prefer the 150gr nosler Partition in the .270win. You won't go wrong with either bullet with the above mentioned calibers,Lou.

All of those rifles are capable calibers. Which one are you most comfortable with / shoot the best with? Where in Colorado are you planning on applying for? What is the max range that you are capable of shooting at?

I have to agree with Doc regarding which calibres to use. I have anchored more Elk with my 270 win then any other calibre. I have used either Partition or Accubonds in the 130gr. and have had great success filling the freezer.

Blessings,
Dan

wayne cant remember off the top of my head.
I am comfortable with all guns listed and have shot them all but the 35 out to 300 with decent groups. longest kills have been 297 with the 270 and 325 with the 300

planning on getting to the range over the next year a lot in different weather and work on getting out to 500.

I'll be the one and go out on a limb here and say take your .260 in another savage, you are obviously used to your 300 and if you set up the 260 the same it will feel familiar . Same safety, trigger pull , length of pull, scope height . About the only thing I would change is your bullet selection for the 260, if it were a muley hunt I 'd say giver but for elk I'd lean toward a suitable weight Partition , 125 or 140 grs. My 2 cents lol.

I agree that an average cow elk weighs maybe 500 lbs. and can be readily and effectively killed with a .270 Win or a .308 Win with sturdy bullets and being shot in the right place.

I think many here would be spitting hairs to say the 270 with a 130 gr would be much more effective then the 260 with a 120- 125 gr . Moving up to 140 gr the difference to 300 yrds would be negligible . In the end it's what's more comfortable in your hands, and if its just for back up chances are good it won't even get out of the case.

I always backup with backup that is equal to or more powerful than the first choice rifle, especially for elk! I would use my .30-06 (or .270 Win) and back up with the 7mm mag.

Thanks guys
Really hoping that other then checking zero once we get there I'll only need to carry one and the other just gets a out of state vacation.
After reading everybody's replies I think the rem 700 270 is going to go because it hasn't been hunted in a few years and it has always been my go to rifle and if something would happen to the 300wm I want the old(shoe) comfy rifle on my shoulder

Good choice bud. I've killed a lot of elk with the 270 Win and 140gr AB. In fact, it was my favorite combo for everything....until the new 150gr ABLR came out. The new bullets should be here on Friday and it'll be time to start working up some loads. I can't wait.

To double tap SB, lots of pics please!

Back in the 1950s and '60s I dropped several small bulls and rag-horns with the .270 and a 130 gr. PT bullet.

Good choice, for your first rifle or back-up.
