Gunsmith Called Part II

That's bizarre. In today's CNC manufacturing you'd think the bore to outside would be really close. I have seen some way off but to be that far off is a lot.

He said it was the most "off" one he had ever seen if I recall correctly.

This rifle shoots!
I hit the Jackpot with this one. Oh Happy Days.
Went to the range today and started working up loads. Shooting the Hornady 250 Grain SP with IMR 4350. 7/8" groups and I think a little seating depth adjustment and they'll settle right down. Oh happy days!

Happy New Year all!

Nice, it sure is nice when you get great results right from the start.

First time that's happened for me.
Reloading is typically an exercise in frustration for me.

OK, I hope the picture of my three best loads show up.
The far right load is 7/8" and the best of three powder charges. 0.8 Grains off max.
Now I need to start tweaking the seating depth.

Very nice Vince! That is real consistent across the board right there buddy. Looks like your going to have a bunch of fun working up loads for that rifle..

The Hornady 250 gr bullet should be a good one at typical 338 WM speeds, probably around 2700 fps I guess. That rifle looks good and will shoot, very nice........

Now I'm going to have to break down and buy a chronograph.

OK, cleaned my rifle last night.
I can't wait until my days off to go test some more loads. I'll play with three different seating depths and see what I get. I got my fingers crossed so I just need to squint my eyes and git 'er done.

Yes it is Gerry.
Usually finding the right load is an exercise in frustration for me. I'm going to play with seating depths now as I believe I've found my powder charge. The 7/8" group had a COAL of 3.310". My next loads will be at 3.320, 3.330, and 3.340.

Well, it looks as if Vince may have a shooter on his hands. He is getting sub-MOA at 100 yards from his 338 Win Mag. This load consists of a Barnes 210 grain TSX charged with IMR 4350.

Not bad; in fact, I believe it will do.

I thought this rifle was a shooter but it too turned in to an exercise in frustration for me.
The Barnes bullet is the third bullet I've tried and I'm on my fourth powder for this rifle. I think with a little tweaking I can pull that one errant round in.

Thank you Mike for taking the time to post the photo. I greatly appreciate it.

I got lost and couldn't find the thread. However, it showed up eventually. That looks like a go with that load.

Yup.
Go kill elk, deer, moose, and bear with that load.

That's a great load Vince. I'm a big believer in 210's out of the 338. They are incredible on big game. Glad you found your load. Can't wait to hear what it clocks.

I'm going to increase the charge by half a grain and see what happens.
I'd like to pull that errant round in if I can. At this stage I'll also play with seating depth a bit too. I finally got something repeatable. When I started working this bullet up nothing was over 2 moa so that's when I knew I was on to something.

Vince if you find that seating depth and pull that in a just a bit you have a real tack driver. The 338 win mag is a very special belted mag and in my humble opinion the most versatile of the medium bore magnums.
I personally have seen more Moose taken with that particular calibre than any other :).

Blessings,
Dan
